CONTINUUM OF SPECIAL EDUCATION – SHORT NOTES
1. Residential Institution:
Children live and study in a supervised setting with 24-hour care and therapy. Most restrictive
environment.
2. Special Day Schools:
Specialised full-day schools for children with disabilities. Students return home daily.
3. Special Class:
A separate class in a regular school with special instruction. Students may join normal classes for
some activities.
4. Regular Classroom with Resource Room:
Student stays in regular class but visits a resource room for remedial teaching and extra support.
5. Regular Classroom with Itinerant Teacher:
A travelling specialist visits schools to support exceptional students and guide teachers.
6. Regular Classroom with Teacher Consultant:
A special educator acts as a consultant to the regular teacher, helping plan strategies and
adjustments.
7. Regular Classroom:
Student learns fully in mainstream class with no special services. Least restrictive environment.
