1. What did you notice during the activity?
2. How long would it take to save up for the item you wrote down?
3. How about saving your money in a bank—how will it earn
interest?
• Abstraction
Concept of Interest
A person invests a certain amount at bank who offers interest. Over a
period of time, the amount of money increases. The additional amount of
money that is gained or charged is called the INTEREST.
These are the important terms for this lesson:
Principal or present value (P)- amount of money borrowed or invested on
the origin date.
Time or term (t)- amount of time in years the money is borrowed or
invested, length of time between the origin and maturity dates.
Rate (r) – annual rate, usually in percent, charged by the lender, or rate of
increase of the investment.
Interest (I)- amount paid or earned for the use of money.

SIMPLE INTEREST
It is the interest charged on the principal amount (P) alone for the entire
duration or period (t) of the loan or investment, at a particular rate (r).

Formula of Simple Interest

I = Prt

I = Interest
P = Principal or amount invested or borrowed
r = Rate convert to decimal value
t = Time in years

Things to Remember
Steps to find Simple Interest
• Read and analyze the problem
• Identify the given and the unknown
• Substitute the given to the formula
• Use calculator for faster solution

Example 1. A bank pays simple interest at the rate of 8% per year for certain
deposits. If a customer deposits Php10,000 and makes no withdrawal for
three years, what is the interest earned in that period of time?
Solution:
I = Prt
I = (10,000) (0.08) (3)
I = 2,400
Answer: The interest earned is 2,400.
Example 2. Amidst of Covid-19 pandemic, Noemi invest Php8,000 into an
account paying an annual interest rate of 8.7%. How many years will it take
for her to earn Php4, 872 in interest?

Solution:
I =Prt
4,872 = (8,000) (0.087) (t)
4,872 = 696t
696 696
t = 7 years
Answer: Therefore, it takes 7 years to earn 4,872 with the investment of
8,000 at interest rate of 8.7%

Example 3. Louise invest Php3, 000 into a savings account. In 4 years, she
earns a total of Php768 in interest. What is the annual interest rate offered
by this account?
Solution:
I = Prt
768 = (3,000) (r)(4)
768 = 12,000 r
12,000 12,000

r = 0.64 or 6.4%

Answer: The annual interest rate offered by Louise account is 6.4%.

• Application (5 mins)
Simple Interest Challenge Game (Teams of 3)
Each team answers a card in turns within a time limit to find the missing
values (principal, rate, time, or interest). Correct answers earn points.
Bonus points for explaining how they got the answer for 2 minutes each
card.

how much interest will you earn?
A.₱100 C. ₱1 ,000
B.₱500 D. ₱2,000

2. What does “P” stand for in the formula I = P × R × T?

A. Payment
B. Principal
C. Price
D. Percent

3. Simple interest is:

A. Interest on both principal and interest
B. Only applied once
C. Based on the original principal only
D. Compounded monthly

4. Which of the following will result in higher simple interest?

A. High principal, low rate, short time
B. Low principal, high rate, short time
C. High principal, high rate, long time
D. Low principal, low rate, long time

5. If the rate is annual, what should you do to the time when it’s in
months?
A. Multiply by 12
B. Leave it
C. Divide by 12
D. Add 12

• Assignment
(Mini Project) Create a real-life example (on paper or digitally) of someone
using simple interest to reach a financial goal. Include:
1. The scenario (e.g., saving for a laptop, borrowing for a business)
2. The formula used
3. All values and calculations
4. A reflection: “Why is it important to understand interest?”

Teachers can effectively introduce these concepts by using relatable examples and interactive activities. By connecting abstract terms like rate, principal, and time to everyday financial scenarios such as loans and savings, teachers make the material relevant. Employing tools like visual aids and real-life problem-solving exercises helps students see the direct application of these concepts. Structuring lessons to build from these foundational ideas fosters a comprehensive understanding .

Using a savings account with simple interest provides a structured way to earn additional money on saved funds, helping a person reach their financial goal faster. The key factors to consider include the interest rate offered, the time they can keep the money in the account, and any minimum balance requirements. A higher rate and longer saving period means more interest earned. Choosing the right account depends on aligning these factors with their saving strategy .

Converting percentages to decimals is crucial in simple interest calculations because the formula I = Prt requires the rate to be expressed as a decimal. Failing to do so can significantly alter the result, leading to erroneous calculations of interest. For instance, using 8% as 8 instead of 0.08 would calculate much higher interest than intended. This step is essential to accurately determine the financial outcomes of investments or loans .

The total interest earned can significantly change depending on the principal amount, the time the money is invested, and the interest rate. To maximize earnings, one should aim to increase the principal, choose investments with higher interest rates, and allow more time for the investment to grow. For instance, if all factors are equal except for the time, extending the period will result in more interest since the formula I = Prt demonstrates a direct relationship between the time and the interest earned .

Understanding simple interest is crucial because it directly impacts how individuals manage loans and savings. For loans, it helps borrowers know how much they will pay over time, which includes the principal and the interest charges. In savings, it aids individuals in calculating how much they will earn from their deposits. This knowledge allows for informed decision-making, such as evaluating loan offers or choosing between different savings options .

The Simple Interest Challenge Game enhances understanding by promoting active participation and competitive problem-solving. By using timed scenarios to find missing values in interest calculations, the game reinforces the practical application of concepts learned. It employs strategies such as teamwork, peer learning, and immediate feedback through discussion of correct answers, which deepens comprehension and retention .

Identifying unknowns in a simple interest problem is significant as it helps focus the problem-solving process and guide the substitution of known values into the formula I = Prt. Recognizing what is unknown—whether it's the principal, rate, time, or interest—prevents confusion during calculations and helps ensure accurate results. Clear identification leads to methodical application of the formula, facilitating correct answers .

Understanding interest is crucial for students as it equips them with the skills to make sound financial decisions. Knowledge of how interest works enables them to compare loan offers, save effectively, and predict returns on investments. This understanding impacts their ability to manage debt, maximize savings growth, and achieve financial goals, serving as a foundation for lifelong financial literacy and empowerment .

To find the time required to earn a specific amount of interest, rearrange the simple interest formula I = Prt to solve for t. The formula becomes t = I / (Pr). By substituting the known values for the interest I, principal P, and rate r, one can calculate the time. For example, to earn Php4,872 with a Php8,000 investment at an 8.7% interest rate, it takes 7 years, as shown when applying the rearranged formula .

The "Wish List" activity engages students by aligning their personal interests with financial goals, making the concept of simple interest relatable. By estimating costs and considering how long it might take to save for these items with accrued interest in a bank, students can practically apply simple interest formulas. This hands-on approach encourages students to analyze savings scenarios, enhancing their understanding of how time, rate, and principal affect interest .
