Network Selection & Evaluation
Network Selection Factors
Technical Requirements
Bandwidth: Analyze current peak usage and future growth. Consider application needs (video,
file transfer) and user expansion. Use peak hour analysis and growth factors.
Latency: Voice <150 milliseconds, Video <200 milliseconds, Gaming <50 milliseconds. Four
delay types: propagation, transmission, processing, queuing.
Scalability: Horizontal (add devices), Vertical (upgrade equipment), Geographic (extend
coverage), Application (new services).
Economic Factors
CapEx: Hardware, software, installation, infrastructure costs. Include warranties and support
contracts.
OpEx: Staff, maintenance, utilities, service fees. Often exceeds initial investment over network
lifetime.
TCO & ROI: Calculate 3-5 year total costs. ROI = (Benefits - Costs)/Costs × 100%.
Operational Requirements
Management: Centralized monitoring, fault detection, configuration control. Complexity
depends on device variety and geographic spread.
Support: Level 1 (basic help), Level 2 (technical), Level 3 (advanced), Emergency (24/7).
Include maintenance planning.
Network Evaluation Factors
Performance Metrics
Throughput: Shannon Capacity: C = B × log₂(1 + SNR) Example: 20 Megahertz, 20 decibels
Signal-to-Noise Ratio → 133 Megabits per second
Latency: Round Trip Time = Propagation + Transmission + Processing + Queuing delays
Target: <1 millisecond for 5G critical apps
Reliability Assessment
Availability: = Mean Time Between Failures/(Mean Time Between Failures + Mean Time To
Repair) × 100%
99.9% = 8.76 hours downtime/year
99.99% = 52 minutes/year
99.999% = 5 minutes/year
Signal Quality: Signal-to-Noise Ratio(decibels) = 10 × log₁₀(Signal/Noise). Target >20
decibels. Received Signal Strength >-70 decibel-milliwatts for good signal.
Coverage & Efficiency
Path Loss: Path Loss(decibels) = 20log₁₀(distance) + 20log₁₀(frequency) + 32.45 Example: 2.4
Gigahertz at 1 kilometer = 100 decibels loss
Spectral Efficiency: Throughput/Bandwidth (bits per second per Hertz). Long Term Evolution:
15-30 bits per second per Hertz
Energy Efficiency: Power/Throughput (Joules per bit). 5G target: ~10⁻⁹ Joules per bit
Quality of Service
Quality of Service Components: Bandwidth allocation, delay control, jitter management,
packet loss limits.
Application Needs: Voice (low latency/jitter), Video (high bandwidth, low loss), Data (high
bandwidth, latency tolerant).
Economic Analysis
TCO: Initial + Installation + Annual maintenance + Staff + Utilities + Replacement over 3-5
years.
ROI Benefits: Productivity gains, cost reductions, new revenue, risk mitigation, customer
satisfaction.
Operational Performance
Management: Centralized control, automatic discovery, performance analysis, remote
management capability.
Support Quality: Response times, technical expertise, geographic coverage, escalation
procedures. Compare internal vs vendor vs third-party options.
