4.0 Data Presentation, Analysis, Discussion and Interpretation

4.1 Introduction

This chapter presents the findings of the research conducted to investigate the enhancement of

language acquisition through personalized learning and technology-driven approaches. The data

was collected using a combination of interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observations to

gain comprehensive insights into the effectiveness and implementation of these methods in

Zimbabwean schools. The chapter is structured to provide a detailed presentation and analysis of

the qualitative data, which has been organized according to the research questions stated in the

initial chapter. Qualitative data is presented and analysed in tables, figures, and narrations. The

findings are then analyzed thematically, highlighting key themes and patterns that emerged from

the data. This thematic analysis is crucial for interpreting how personalized learning and

technology-driven approaches impact language acquisition, and for understanding the

experiences and perspectives of teachers and students involved in the study.

4.2 Results and Findings

4.2.1 Research Question 1: How can personalized learning and technology driven

approaches enhance English language acquisition?

Teachers were interviewed with the objective of gaining insight into their perceptions regarding

personalized learning and technology driven approaches as English Language acquisition

enhancers. The teachers were asked questions pertaining their understanding of personalized

can significantly enhance English language acquisition through several key mechanisms:

Figure 4.1: Showing the mechanisms for language acquisition enhancement

THEMES

Engagement and Motivation

Teachers noted that personalized learning and technology-driven approaches enhance learners'

engagement and motivation by making learning more relevant, interactive, and enjoyable. These

approaches incorporate game-like elements, multimedia resources, and interactive activities that

capture learners' interest and encourage active participation. The following statements were

echoed by the teachers;

"Technology allows for more engaging and interactive learning experiences, such as virtual

reality environments where learners can practice language skills in realistic scenarios."(T1).

"Technology provides a variety of interactive and multimedia resources that can make learning

more dynamic and interesting, such as video lessons, interactive exercises, and games."(T2).

"Multimedia resources such as videos and interactive games can also help learners understand

and retain new vocabulary and grammar concepts more." (T3).

Immediate Feedback and Progress Tracking

One of the significant benefits of technology-driven approaches noted by the teachers is the

ability to provide immediate feedback and track learners' progress. This feature helps learners to

quickly identify and correct mistakes, understand their learning trajectories, and stay motivated

by seeing their improvements over time. The ability to provide instant feedback and track

learners' progress helps learners quickly identify areas for improvement and stay motivated by

seeing their advancements. Teacher T2's response demonstrates how personalized learning paths

with gamified elements can lead to improved language skills through continuous feedback.

"One of my most successful experiences was with a group of learners using a language learning

platform that combined personalized learning paths with gamified elements. Each learner had a

unique learning path based on their initial assessments. The platform's interactive activities and

instant feedback helped keep the learners engaged and motivated. By the end of the academic

year, not only did their language test scores improve, but they also demonstrated better

communication skills and a greater interest in learning English." (T2)

Practical Application and Real-World Skills

Teachers reiterated that personalized learning and technology-driven approaches offer

opportunities for learners to apply their language skills in practical, real-world contexts.

Simulations, virtual reality, and role-playing activities help learners practice conversational skills

and problem-solving in realistic scenarios, enhancing their overall language proficiency and

confidence. Teacher T3 noted;

"Technology allows for more engaging and interactive learning experiences, such as virtual

reality environments where learners can practice language skills in realistic scenarios." (T3).

Tailored Instruction

The teachers highlighted the need for tailored language instruction to assist learners in language

acquisition. Adaptive learning software and personalized learning plans that cater to individual

learner needs enhance language acquisition by ensuring that each learner receives instruction and

practice that align with their proficiency level and learning pace. Teacher T2's experience shows

how tailored instruction through the use of a language learning platform led to improved

language proficiency. The teacher noted;

"In one of my form 3 classes after the outbreak of Covid 19, we used a blended learning model

where learners alternated between teacher-led instruction and independent work on a language

learning platform. The platform provided personalized exercises and allowed learners to

progress at their own pace. One learner who was initially struggling with English saw

remarkable improvement. By the end of the term, his reading comprehension and writing skills

had improved. He also became much more confident in participating in class discussions." (T2).
Discussion

The study reveals that personalized learning and technology-driven approaches can significantly

enhance English language acquisition by increasing engagement and motivation, providing

immediate feedback and progress tracking, offering practical application of language skills, and

enabling tailored instruction. Teachers noted that interactive and multimedia resources such as

virtual reality environments, video lessons, and games make learning more dynamic and

interesting, thereby capturing learners' interest and encouraging active participation. This aligns

with Penuel (2016) and Chikwavaire et Al. (2018) findings on personalised learning's ability to

improve learner engagement, motivation and achievement in language acquisition. The ability to

provide instant feedback and track progress helps learners quickly identify and correct mistakes,

understand their learning trajectories, and stay motivated by seeing their advancements,

supporting Mawere and Mpofu (2019) findings on personalised learning and technology driven

approaches' ability to provide feedback, adaptive content and learner - centred activities which

ultimately lead to advancements in comprehension, fluency, and confidence in using English.

Practical applications through simulations and role-playing activities help learners practice

conversational skills in realistic contexts, enhancing language proficiency and confidence, which

is consistent with Kolb's experiential learning theory. Additionally, adaptive learning software

and personalized learning plans ensure that instruction is aligned with individual proficiency

levels and learning paces, as noted by Vygotsky's (1978) social constructivist theory, which

emphasizes the importance of tailored guidance in learning. These findings suggest that

integrating personalized learning and technology-driven approaches can create a more effective

and engaging English language learning environment, ultimately leading to improved language

skills and greater learner confidence.

4.2.2 Research Question 2: How can technology driven approaches support personalised

Discussion
The study underscores the significant benefits of personalized learning and technology-driven

approaches in language acquisition, including individualization, engagement, immediate

feedback, collaborative learning, and practical application. Interactive language apps and VR

environments, as noted by both teachers and learners, cater to individual learning paces and

provide realistic contexts for language practice, enhancing comprehension and retention. These

findings align with theories such as Deci and Ryan's (2011) Self-Determination Theory and

Guo's (2024) findings, which revealed engagement, comprehension and retention as benefits of

personalised learning in enhancing language acquisition. Deci and Ryan's Self - Determination

emphasize motivation and concrete experiences in learning. The study also revealed several

limitations, that is, technical issues and access disparities which exacerbate educational

inequalities, potential distractions and over-reliance on technology can hinder independent

learning, and time and resource constraints pose challenges for teachers in implementing

personalized instruction effectively. These findings align with Gunawardena et al. (2023) study

that limitations of personalised learning include, challenges dealing with learners' behaviour that

may hinder independent learning, complex curriculum, disparities in learners' cognitive abilities

and access issues. Addressing these challenges requires ensuring a comprehensive policy that

will minimise the barriers. Iintegrating technological tools thoughtfully, and providing sufficient

support for both teachers and learners to fully harness the potential of personalized learning can

be effective.

4.2.4 Research Question 4: How can personalised learning and technology driven

approaches be implemented effectively in Zimbabwean Schools?

In realising how personalised learning and technology driven approaches can effectively be

implemented in Zimbabwean Schools, the researcher administered interview questions to the

three teachers to gain insight on their understanding of these approaches, how they have

implemented the approaches thus far, and recommendations for successful implementation. The

research further conducted classroom observations to realise how the three teachers have been

integrating the approaches, how learners interact with technology, and identify areas of

improvement for effective implementation. This was done in order to validate or triangulate the

data, which might be essential for the successful implementation of personalised learning and

technology driven approaches.

The data from interview yielded themes, that is, current implementation practices,

recommendations for effective implementation, understanding and attitude, challenges and

barriers.

Implementation practices

Sub themes

Current implementation

Teachers have already begun integrating personalized learning and technology into their

classrooms using various tools and strategies. Teacher T3 uses educational software like Google

Classroom. The following statement were echoed by the teacher;

"I often use interactive simulations in my language lessons to cater to learners who learn better

through visual and hands-on activities."(T3).

Teacher T2 employs online platforms like Quizziz: "I use educational videos and interactive

quizzes to reinforce lessons and provide immediate feedback to learners'." (T2).

Teacher T1 integrates tools like Quizziz and Google meet: "At times, I assign tasks and use

interactive games that adapt to each learner's skill level, ensuring that all of them are challenged

appropriately."

This shows how the educational landscape in Zimbabwean is changing and there is need for

widespread implementation of personalised learning and technology driven approaches.

Challenges and barriers

Digital divide

Significant challenges include the lack of sufficient devices and reliable internet connectivity.

The teachers highlighted the issue of resource accessibility. The following statements were

echoed by teachers;

"One major challenge is the lack of sufficient devices and reliable internet connectivity. Not all

learners have access to these resources at home." (T2).

"The main challenge is the digital divide. Some learners have access to advanced technology at

home, while others don’t even have a basic computer."(T1).

Technical support

The teachers noted the need for technical support. The responses show that despite the advent of

technology and the school's ability to infuse technology into the teaching and learning process,

teachers are well short of the highly needed technical support. This is because some teachers
trained back then when technology in Zimbabwean Schools was not much emphasized compared

to now. Teacher T3 echoed;

"One of the biggest challenges is the lack of technical support and training for teachers. It can

be overwhelming to keep up with new technologies without proper guidance." (T3)

Thus, it is imperative that teachers are provided with the necessary technical support to avoid

reluctance and a continuation of one - size - fits - all approach, which proved not to yield desired

educational outcomes.

For effective implementation of personalised - learning and technology driven approaches, the

teachers recommended a focus on specific constructs to better the current practices.

The data from the interviews indicate that while there is a positive attitude towards personalized

learning and technology-driven approaches, several challenges hinder their effective

implementation. These include lack of resources, digital divide, and insufficient technical

support. Addressing these challenges through continuous professional development, equitable

access to technology, and improved infrastructure will be essential for the successful

implementation of these educational approaches in Zimbabwean schools.

Support and Resources

There is a need for more comprehensive training, better access to modern devices, and reliable

internet connectivity. Teacher (T1) emphasized the need for professional development:

"We need more comprehensive professional development programs, better access to modern

devices, and reliable internet connectivity to implement these approaches effectively." (T1)
Teacher (T3) called for ongoing training:

"We need ongoing training, more up-to-date devices, and a stable internet connection to make

the most of these approaches." (T2).

Teacher (T4) highlighted the need for additional resources citing;

"Additional funding for up-to-date technology, continuous professional development, and

technical support is essential for effective implementation." (T4).

Continuous Professional development

Effective implementation requires continuous professional development, equitable access to

technology, and improved infrastructure. One of the teachers (T3), recommended continuous

professional development and support:

"It’s essential to provide continuous professional development for teachers to keep up with new

technologies and teaching strategies." (T3).

Teacher (T5) emphasized the need for inclusive access;

"Teachers need regular training and access to the latest educational technology. There should

also be a focus on creating more inclusive access to technology for all learners." (T5).

Teacher (T2) suggested improving infrastructure;

"Continuous professional development for teachers and access to the latest technology are

crucial. There should be regular training sessions and technical support available." (T2).
To triangulate this data, classroom observations were conducted by the researcher. The

classroom observations provided valuable insights into how personalized learning and

technology-driven approaches can be effectively implemented in Zimbabwean schools. Based on

the findings, the following strategies are recommended:

Comprehensive Lesson Planning and Structure - Integration of Technology

Teachers should incorporate technology tools and resources into their lesson plans. This includes

using educational software, online platforms, and interactive multimedia resources to cater to

different learning styles and paces. For example, Teacher (T2) used Quizziz for individualized

language practice, allowing learners to progress at their own pace.

Personalized Support and Feedback

Teachers should provide individualized support and real-time feedback to learners, leveraging

technology to monitor progress and address specific learning needs. For example, teacher (T1)

moved around the classroom to check learners' progress on their language exercises, offering

assistance where needed.

Interactive and Engaging Lessons

Utilizing interactive technologies such as tablets, mobile phones, and educational software like

Google classroom and Quizziz can significantly increase learners' engagement and

[Link] (T4) used Google classroom to engage learners through discussions, which

captivated their attention and increased participation.

Equitable Access to Technology

Ensuring all learners have access to the necessary technology both in school and at home is

crucial. Schools need to invest in sufficient devices and reliable internet connectivity. From the

observations, teacher (T3) classroom hghlighted the digital divide, not all learners had access to

adequate technology, impacting their ability to keep up.

Ongoing Training for Teachers

Regular and comprehensive professional development programs should be provided to help

teachers stay updated with the latest technologies and teaching strategies. Teacher (T5) revealed

the need for more structured support and training for teachers to effectively integrate new

technologies into their teaching.

Interpretation

The triangulation diagram is a visual representation of how findings collected using the two data

sources—interviews and classroom observations—intersect and validate each other in relation to

the research question (RSQ4). The diagram shows that these themes, derived from interviews

and observations, overlap and integrate into answering the research question. For example, both

sources highlight the importance of technology integration and support, and ongoing teacher

training, indicating that these are critical areas in the implementation of personalised learning

and technology - driven approaches. The alignment of these findings across both data collection

instruments enhances the credibility of the conclusions drawn in the study. Triangulation can

enhance the validity of research findings by cross-verifying data obtained from different

instruments, thereby minimizing the chances of anomalies that could arise from relying on a

single method (Noble & Heale, 2019). Therefore, integrating the findings from both the

interviews and observations will give reliable conclusions on how personalised - learning and

technology - driven approaches can be implemented effectively in Zimbabwean Schools.

Discussion

The study highlights that personalized learning and technology-driven approaches can be

effectively implemented in Zimbabwean schools through comprehensive lesson planning,

personalized support, interactive lessons, equitable access to technology, and ongoing teacher
training. Teachers have already integrated tools like Google Classroom, Edmodo, and ClassDojo,

aligning with broader literature emphasizing the benefits of such technologies in education

(Herodotou et al., 2019). However, significant challenges, such as insufficient devices, unreliable

internet connectivity, and lack of technical support, impede broader implementation. Addressing

these challenges requires substantial investment in infrastructure, equitable access to technology,

and continuous professional development, as underscored by Moyo and Mashavakure (2020).

Effective implementation involves integrating technology tools and resources into lesson plans,

providing individualized support, utilizing interactive technologies, and ensuring equitable

access, which aligns with the findings of Mishra and Koehler (2006) on the Technological

Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. Classroom observations confirm these

strategies' effectiveness, with increased student engagement, improved performance, and greater

interest in learning, supporting Deci and Ryan's (2000) Self-Determination Theory, which

emphasizes the role of engaging and relevant learning experiences in fostering intrinsic

[Link] the digital divide, providing technical support, and maintaining regular

training programs for teachers are crucial for successful implementation, echoing the findings of

Ncube and Maphosa (2020) on the importance of teacher preparedness and support in the digital

age. By aligning with these broader theoretical frameworks and empirical studies, the study

provides a comprehensive roadmap for effectively implementing personalized learning and

technology-driven approaches in Zimbabwean schools, ultimately leading to improved

educational outcomes.
