BIOLOGY IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM
Philosophy of education proposes that knowledge is transmitted for two reasons:
1. For knowledge sake
2. For utility purposes
Purpose of teaching
1. Make learners aware of scientific / biological ,skills and procedure
2. Apply biological knowledge and skills to solve problems
According to biology syllabus, there are 3 goals that the learners should acquire
➢ Acquire a certain amount of information which is also useful in solving real life
problems (application of utility)
➢ Acquire certain manuals (psychomotor) and thinking (cognitive) skills which are also
useful in solving practical problems
➢ Acquire useful attitudes about themselves e.g being confident, objective, self discipline
and positive attitudes towards the environment.
General objectives set to be achieved by the end of the lesson
I. Communicate biological information in a precise clear manner
II. Develop and understand of the inter relationship between plants and animals and between
humans and their environment
III. Apply knowledge to improve and maintain the health of the individual, family and
community.
IV. Relate and apply relevant biological knowledge and understanding to social and
economic situations in rural and urban settings.
V. Observe and identify features of familiar and unfamiliar organism, record the
observations and make deductions about the functions of the parts of the organisms.
VI. Develop positive attitude and interest towards biology and the relevant practical skills
VII. Demonstrate resources, relevance, technical skills and scientific thinking necessary for
economic development.
VIII. Design and carry out experiments and projects that will enable them to understand
biological concept.
IX. Have an awareness of the value of cooperation in solving problems
X. Acquire a firm foundation of relevant knowledge , skills and attitudes for further
education and training in related scientific field.
The three goals of teaching biology involves the three components of teaching science
• Content / knowledge
• Processes/ skills
• Attitudes
1. Content / Knowledge
It’s a body of established knowledge inform of concepts, facts, theories and laws.
A concept;- An abstraction used to classify words, ideas, objects, feelings which have
certain common characteristics e.g photosynthesis
Fact;- Something known to be true. They are specific, isolated and non controversial
pieces of information derived from various sources e.g lectures
A Theory;- Hypothesis that concur with the observed results
Law;- A widely accepted generalization which explains some phenomenon interms of
cause and effects
2. Processes and Skills
Comprises the cognitive and manipulative skills for promotion and development of
scientific practices.
Processes; Established ways of working that are accepted by all scientists all over the
world.
Skill ;- Ability to carry out a process also means how well or effective one is able to carry
out.
3. Attitudes
Include beliefs and values e.g
• Being curious
• Cooperative
• Self confidence
• Resourcesfulness
• Appreciating the aesthetic value of our environment
• Being objective
•
