UNITS & DIMENSIONS – FULL DERIVATION PDF

METHOD OF DERIVING DIMENSIONS:

1. Write the defining formula.

2. Replace each quantity with its dimensional formula.

3. Simplify using algebraic rules.

-------------------------------------------------------

1. Velocity (v)

Formula: v = distance / time

Dimensions: [v] = [L] / [T] = L T^-1

2. Acceleration (a)

Formula: a = velocity / time = (L T^-1) / T

Dimensions: [a] = L T^-2

3. Momentum (p)

Formula: p = m v = M × (L T^-1)

Dimensions: [p] = M L T^-1

4. Force (F)

Formula: F = m a = M × (L T^-2)

Dimensions: [F] = M L T^-2

5. Work/Energy (W)
Formula: W = F × s = (M L T^-2) × L

Dimensions: [W] = M L^2 T^-2

6. Power (P)

Formula: P = W / t = (M L^2 T^-2) / T

Dimensions: [P] = M L^2 T^-3

7. Pressure (P)

Formula: P = F / A = (M L T^-2) / (L^2)

Dimensions: [P] = M L^-1 T^-2

8. Density (ρ)

Formula: ρ = mass / volume = M / (L^3)

Dimensions: [ρ] = M L^-3

-------------------------------------------------------

9. Surface Tension (T_s)

Formula: T_s = Force / Length = (M L T^-2) / L

Dimensions: [T_s] = M T^-2

10. Viscosity (η)

Formula: η = (Shear stress) / (velocity gradient)

→ η = (F/A) / (v/L)

Dimensions: (M L T^-2 / L^2) / (L T^-1 / L)

→ [η] = M L^-1 T^-1

11. Elastic Modulus (E)

Formula: E = Stress / Strain = (F/A) / 1

Dimensions: (M L T^-2 / L^2) = M L^-1 T^-2

12. Angular Velocity (ω)

Formula: ω = θ / t = (dimensionless) / T

Dimensions: [ω] = T^-1

13. Angular Acceleration (α)

Formula: α = ω / t = (T^-1) / T

Dimensions: T^-2

14. Torque (τ)

Formula: τ = Force × perpendicular distance = (M L T^-2) × L

Dimensions: M L^2 T^-2

15. Moment of Inertia (I)

Formula: I = m r^2 = M × L^2

Dimensions: M L^2

16. Spring Constant (k)

Formula: F = k x → k = F/x

Dimensions: M L^2 T^-3 I^-1

22. Capacitance (C)

Formula: C = q / V = (I T) / (M L^2 T^-3 I^-1)

Dimensions: M^-1 L^-2 T^4 I^2

23. Resistance (R)

Formula: R = V / I = (M L^2 T^-3 I^-1) / I

Dimensions: M L^2 T^-3 I^-2

24. Resistivity (ρ_e)

Formula: ρ_e = R A / L

Dimensions: (M L^2 T^-3 I^-2)(L^2)/L = M L^3 T^-3 I^-2

25. Magnetic Field (B)

Formula: Lorentz force: F = q v B → B = F / (q v)
