Calculations Assignment

Christian Saavedra

Goal:
To understand that equations & calculations are an important aspect of nutrition assessment. Also, to
prepare yourself for similar questions on your 1st exam.

Course Objective: Understand the changing nutritional needs across the life span as they related to
metabolism and weight changes.

Directions:
1. Complete each equation below.
2. Show ALL of your work, not just the answer.
3. You may write in hand and scan to turn in or complete electronically.
4. Refer to Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 Power Points with voiceovers/text/ATI pages for guidance.
Every question below has been discussed in both texts and the PP’s with voiceovers.
5. Do NOT google the answers or you will miss them.

Grading Criteria:
-Each question below is worth 3 points. You will be awarded the full 3 points if 100% of your work
is shown (1pt), you have the correct answer (1pt) & use the equations discussed in class (1pt). Please
use the Harris Benedict Equation to calculate BMR on questions 5, 6 & 7. Don’t forget to use
activity factors in the BMR calculations.
-You will lose 1 point if 100% of work is not shown, partial work is shown and/or only the final
answer is shown.
-You will lose 1 point if you have the wrong answer, but show you are using the correct process.
-You will lose 2 points if you don’t use the equations to complete the questions discussed in class.

1. (3 points possible) What is the BMI for a 231# person who is 5-10 inches tall? Does this
BMI fall within the “healthy” range?

A healthy range for BMI falls in the 18.5→24.9 range

231 𝑥703 162,393

2
= = 33.14
70 4,900

2. (3 points possible) Calculate the weight change of a patient with usual weight of 200# (Feb
2017) and current weight of 182# (August 2017) and write the answer. Is this weight change
considering to be “significant” or “non-significant”?

Given that the weight change was in the period of six months this would be considered a
significant weight change.
200 − 182 20
= = 0.1 𝑥 100 = 10 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
200 200

Months→ 6

3. (3 points possible) Calculate the weight change of a patient with usual weight of 127# (Feb
2017) and current weight of 136# (March 2017) and write the answer. Is this weight change
“significant” or “non-significant”?

The change is within one month period, this would be considered a significant weight change.

127 − 136 −9
= = −0.07 𝑥 100 = −7 = 7 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
127 127

Months → 1

4. (3 points possible) Calculate the weight change of a patient with usual weight of 293# (Feb
2022) and current weight of 245# (May 2022) and write the answer. Is this weight change
“significant” or “non-significant”?

293 − 245 48
= = 0.16 𝑥 100 = 16 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
293 293

Months → 3

5. (3 points possible) Calculate and write below, the BMR of a 27 year-old female who is 135#
and 5-7”. She exercises two times per week. How many calories does she need to maintain
her weight?

655+(9.6 x 61.3) + (1.8 x 169.18) – (4.7 x 27)

655+588.48+304.52-126.9
1,243.48+177.62=1,421.1
1,421.1 x 1,375= 1,887.405 Calories are needed in order to maintain weight.

6. (3 points possible) Calculate and write below, the BMR of a 62 year-old male who is 210#
and 5-11”. He does not engage in regular activity. How many calories does he need to
maintain his weight?

66+(13.7 x 95) + ( 5 x 180.34) – (6.8 x 62)

66+ 1.301.5 + 901.7- 421.6
1,367.5+ 480.11= 1,847.6
1,847.6 x 1.2 = 2,121.1 Calories needed to maintain weight

7. (3 points possible) Calculate and write below, the BMR of a 20 year-old female who is 120#
and 5-4”. She exercises four times per week. How many calories does she need to maintain
her weight?

665+ (9.6 x 50) + (1.8 x 102.56) – (4.7 x 20)

655 + 480 + 184.6 = 94
1,135 + 90.6= 1.225.6
1.225.6 x 1.55 = 1,899.68 Calories needed in order to maintain weight.
