Scanning means reading quickly to find a specific piece of information.

Content words carry meaning in a sentence.
Examples: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.

Function words help connect or complete the grammar but do not hold full meaning.
Examples: prepositions, articles, conjunctions, pronouns.

How does the Principal’s office look like in the story?
The Principal’s office is neat, well-arranged and attractive. There are books on the shelves, files
on the table, a flower vase, comfortable chairs and meaningful quotations on the wall. The room
shows discipline, order and professionalism.
Define prefix and suffix with examples.
A prefix is a group of letters added before a word to change its meaning.
Example: un + happy = unhappy, re + write = rewrite.
A suffix is added after the word to change meaning or grammar.
Example: teach + er = teacher, care + ful = careful.
What are Homonyms? Explain with examples.
Homonyms are words that have the same spelling or same pronunciation but different meanings.
Examples:
• Bat (animal) / Bat (used in cricket)
• Bank (river side) / Bank (place of money)

Parts of speech are the basic categories of words according to their function in a sentence.
There are eight main parts of speech:

Write a note on the appearance & character of Mr. Aziza.
Mr. Aziza is a strict but responsible person. His appearance is serious and disciplined. He dresses
neatly and presents himself like a professional administrator. He believes in following rules,
respecting time, and maintaining discipline. As a Hostel Supervisor, he tries to create a safe and
well-organised environment for students. He takes decisions carefully and expects students to
behave properly. Although he may look strict, he shows kindness when needed, which proves
that he is a balanced and fair character. His actions show commitment, dedication and leadership
qualities.

The narrator wanted to meet Mr. Aziza because she had not received her salary for two months.
As she was in need of money, she decided to talk to him personally. Mr. Aziza was the hostel
supervisor and he was responsible for clearing staff payments. He withheld the salary because he
believed in discipline and proper attendance. He wanted to teach her the value of responsibility
and rules. Although his action seemed strict, later it helped the narrator learn discipline.

What does the mother’s reaction to the scorpion’s sting suggest about her character?
The mother remains brave and strong even after the scorpion stings her. She suffers silently
without blaming anyone. The villagers try many superstitious methods, but she does not hate or
curse the scorpion. After hours of pain, her first words show her true nature. She says she is
thankful to God because the scorpion did not bite her children. This shows her selfless love and
sacrifice. Her pain did not matter, but the safety of her children was more important. Her
character represents the Indian mother who is loving, strong and patient.
