Chapter 1

Exploring the Influence of Social Media on Student Academic Performance

Background of the study

Social media has become an integral part of students daily lives, shaping how they
communicate, access information, and engage with academic content. With the rise of digital
connectivity, platform such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok have revolution the way students
interact with their peers, educators, and learning materials. These platforms provide
numerous opportunities for collaboration, discussion, and knowledge sharing, allowing
students to access a wealth of educational resources, participate in academic communities and
enhance their learning experiences through interactive engagement. However, alongside these
benefits, social media also present challenge that can negatively impact students’ academic
performance. Excessive use of social media can lead to distractions, reduced focus, and
procrastination. This study aims to explore positive and negative influence of social media on
students.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to examine the impact of social media on students’

academic performance. It explores both the positive and negative effects
that social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and
Twitter, have on students learning habits. The research will Focus on a
specific group of students from a selected high school.

EX. The study will examine the extent to which social media usage affects students’ grades.
The findings will help educators and students develop strategies for more effective and
balanced.
The research will include surveys, interviews, or perspective.
Definition of Terms
Social media - refers to online platform such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok,
where users create, share, and interact with content.
Academic performance - the measurable out comes of a student’s learning process typically
assessed through grades. Test scores and overall achievement in school.
Students Engagement - the level of participation, involvement and interest students show in
academic activities.
Distraction- refers to the diversion of attention from academic tasks due to excessive use of
social media.
Time Management - The ability of students to allocate their time effectively between
academic responsibilities and social media usage.
Online Learning - educational activities conducted through digital platforms which may be
enhanced or hindered by social media.

Educators and students must strike a balance by leveraging social media for learning while
minimizing its negative effects. Future research should focus on strategies to optimize social
media use in academic settings to enhance students' performance.

CHAPTER 2

Introduction

Social media has transformed the educational landscape, providing students with new
opportunities for communication, collaboration, and learning. Platforms such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok serve as sources of academic information and social
interaction. While social media has proven beneficial in fostering engagement and access to
educational resources, concerns remain regarding its potential to distract students, reduce
productivity, and impact academic performance. This review examines theories related to
social media uses and their implications for student academic performances."

Body Linking Theories

According to Uses Gratifications Theory, this theory suggests that students use social media
to fulfill various needs, including information-seeking, entertainment, and social interaction
(Johnson & Parker, 2011). Studies indicate that students who use social media for academic
purposes experience enhanced engagement, while excessive recreational uses leads to
decreased focus on studies. (Robert & Taylor, 2022). argue that excessive exposure to social
media can contributed to cognitive over load reducing student's ability to process and retain
academic information effectively. Multitasking between social media and academic work
may result in decreased academic performance. According to (Martinez Wong, 2023), Social
media can support intrinsic motivation when students use it for academic discussions,
collaboration, and problem-solving. Nguyen et al. (2024) suggest that students heavily reliant
on social media for academic learning reliant may struggles with critical thinking skills as
they passively consume information instead of actively engaging in research and analysis.

Body Using Positive Findings of Studies

Online study groups help students share knowledge, clarify doubts, and collaborate on
assignments. (Smith & Johnson, 2020) found that students using social media platforms for
academic discussions demonstrated higher engagement and improved comprehension of
complex topics (Williams et al, 2021) reported that platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn
Learning, and educational blogs have provided students with high-quality academic resources
develop content improving their understanding of subjects. Development of digital literacy -
Kim & Patel (2022) emphasized that students who use social media for academic research
develop critical digital literacy skills, enabling them to evaluate sources, verify information,
and use online tools effectively. (Lopez G, 2023) found increased academic motivation that
students who engage in online academic communities feel more motivated to participate in
discussions, complete assignments on time and perform better in exams. Brown Ahmed
Supportive Learning Environments concluded that social media fosters a sense of community
among students allowing them to seek academic help, share study resources, and receive
emotional support from peers.

Body Using Negative Impacts on Findings of Studies

Despite the advantages, excessive or unregulated social media use can negatively impact
student performance. (Garcia, 2020) found that students who frequently check social media
during study sessions have retention rates and decreased productivity leading to academic
performance. (Lee, 2021) discovered that students who spend excessive time on social media
often procrastinate on academic tasks, miss deadlines, and struggle to maintain a structured
study schedule. (Carter & Wood, 2022) noted that excessive social media usage contributes to
stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation negatively affecting students' ability to focus and
perform well academically. Spread of misinformation (Nguyen & Quach, 2023) found that
students who rely on social media for academic information often encounter misinformation
due to misconnections and poor understanding of subjects. Academic dishonesty (Patel,
2024) reported that social media platforms have facilitated cheating, plagiarism, and the
sharing of unauthorized exam materials, raising concerns about academic integrity.

Conclusion:

The findings indicate that social media has dual impact on student academic performance.
While it provides access to educational resources, promotes collaboration, and enhances
motivation, excessive and unregulated use can lead to distractions, poor time management,
and academic dishonesty.

City. Grade 11 students with a population of 292 are the ones who will participate in the
study.

Data Gathering

Samples will be taken from grade 11 students. Opportunistic sampling will be used to select
participants. Researchers will only gather the participants that are available during the data
gathering process. Data gathering will take 1 week from the 1st week of March up to the last
week of the month. Interview materials will be the main data gathering to be used. The
researcher will use semi-structured interview so that researcher can freely give follow
questions.
