2. Reasoning: 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60

Use this fact to work out these calculations.

a) 15 ÷ 2.5 = 𝟔 (𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑠 10𝑥 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟)

b) 1.5 ÷ 2.5 = 0. 𝟔 (𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑠 100𝑥 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟)
c) 1500 ÷ 2.5 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎 (𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑠 10𝑥 𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑟)
d) 150 ÷ 0.25 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎 (𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑠 10𝑥 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟)
e) 150 ÷ 0.025 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎 (𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑠 100𝑥 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟)
f) 150 ÷ 25 = 𝟔 (𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑠 10𝑥 𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑟)

3. Fynn compares the costs of holiday insurance from two companies.

• Diamond: £11.80 for 7 days

• Bell: £1.72 per day

a Work out the cost of insurance per day with Diamond. Give your answer to the nearest
penny.

11.80 ÷ 7 = 𝟏. 𝟔𝟖𝟓𝟕 ….

Answer: £1.69

b Reasoning: Which company offers the cheaper rate per day?

Diamond is cheaper (£1.69 vs £1.72).

4. A boa constrictor is 45 cm long at birth.

This table shows its increase in length over its first 4 years

(Year 1: 70cm, Year 2: 60cm, Year 3: 33cm, Year 4: 13cm).

a Work out the mean increase in length over the first 4 years.

(70 + 60 + 33 + 13) ÷ 4

176 ÷ 4

44𝑐𝑚

b Use your mean increase in length to estimate the length of a boa constrictor at the end of
the 5th year. Give your answer in meters.

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = 𝐵𝑖𝑟𝑡ℎ 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ + (5 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠 × 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒)

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = 45 + (5 × 44)

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = 45 + 220

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = 265𝑐𝑚

Answer: 2.65 m

c Reasoning: Is the model used in part b a good model? Explain your answer.

No. The table shows the growth rate is slowing down significantly each year (from 70cm to
13cm), so using a mean (average) based on early fast growth will likely overestimate the 5th
year's growth.

5. Problem-solving: Faisal is looking for wood to make a shelter. He finds a 3 m tree branch
lying on the ground. He cuts a 1.1 m piece and a 0.76 m piece from the branch. Each of his
two saw cuts uses 0.002 m. What length is left?

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 = 1.1 + 0.76 + (2 × 0.002)

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 = 1.86 + 0.004

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 = 1.864𝑚

𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑙𝑒𝑓𝑡 = 3 − 1.864 = 1.136𝑚

6. Problem-solving: The diagram shows four regular polygons. The sum of the perimeters of
the triangle (side 5.3cm) and hexagon (side 3.6cm) is equal to the sum of the perimeters of
the pentagon (side 4.7cm) and square. Work out the side length of the square.

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 = 3 × 5.3 = 15.9𝑐𝑚

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑒𝑥𝑎𝑔𝑜𝑛 = 6 × 3.6 = 21.6𝑐𝑚

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 (𝑇 + 𝐻) = 15.9 + 21.6 = 37.5𝑐𝑚

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑜𝑛 = 5 × 4.7 = 23.5𝑐𝑚

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 = 37.5 × 23.5 = 14𝑐𝑚

𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 = 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5𝑐𝑚

7. Problem-solving

a A regular volleyball court has a perimeter of 54 m. The length of the court is 18 m. What is
the area of the court?

• 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑤𝑖𝑑𝑡ℎ𝑠 = 54 − (18 × 2) = 54 − 36 = 18𝑚

• 𝑊𝑖𝑑𝑡ℎ = 18 ÷ 2 = 9𝑚

• 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 18 × 9 = 162𝑚2

b A rugby pitch has an area of 9800𝑚2 . The width of the pitch is 70 m. What is its perimeter?

• 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = 9800 ÷ 70 = 140𝑚

• 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 2 × (140 + 70) = 2 × 210 = 420𝑚

8. Problem-solving: A square board game has an area of2500𝑐𝑚2 . What is the perimeter of the
board?

• 𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ = √2500 = 50𝑐𝑚

• 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 50 × 4 = 200𝑐𝑚
