Tutorial-10
Ans: 32.95 m2
Question 2: A counter-flow, concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating
oil for a large industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube
is 0.18 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil through the annulus is 0.12 kg/s. The inner tube has a mean
diameter of 20 mm. The inlet and outlet temperatures of oil are 95°C and 65°C respectively. The
water enetrs at 30°C to the heat exchanger. The heat transfer coefficient on inside and outside
surfaces of tube are 3088.7 W/m2°C and 25.2 W/m2°C respectively. Neglecting the tube wall
thermal resistance, calculate the length of tube of heat exchanger. The values of cp for lubricating
oil and cooling water may be taken as 2.131 kJ/Kg K and 4.174 kJ/Kg K respectively.
Ans: 110.49 m
Question 3: A heat exchanger is to be designed to condense an organic vapour at a rate of
500 kg/min which is available at its saturation temperature 82°C. Cooling water at 13°C is
available at a flow arte of 60 kg/s. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 475 W/m2°C. Latent heat
of condensation of the organic vapour is 600 kJ/kg. Calculate the number of tubes required, if 25
mm outer diameter and 4.87 m long tubes are available.
Ans: 470 tubes
Question 4: In a chemical plant, 16.5 kg/s of the hot fluid (cp = 3.55 kJ/kg°C) at 650°C is
used to heat 20.5 kg/s of the liquid product (cp = 4.2 kJ/kg°C) at 100°C in a concentric tube
parallel flow heat exchanger. If the overall heat transfer coefficient is 0.95 W/m2°C and the
effective heat transfer area is 44 m2, calculate (i) effectiveness of heat exchanger, (ii) outelet
temperature of liquid product.
Ans: (i) 0.415, (ii) 255.4°C
