INTRODUCTION TO AUDIT RISK

Audit risk is the risk that an auditor expresses an inappropriate opinion on financial
statements that are materially misstated. Understanding audit risk is fundamental to
planning and performing an effective audit.

Audit risk consists of three components: inherent risk, control risk, and detection risk.
Inherent risk relates to the susceptibility of an assertion to misstatement, control risk
reflects the effectiveness of internal controls, and detection risk concerns the auditor’s
procedures.

Auditors manage audit risk by adjusting the nature, timing, and extent of audit procedures.
Professional judgment plays a crucial role in assessing risks and determining audit
responses.

Ultimately, effective audit risk management enhances audit quality and supports the
credibility of financial reporting.
