National Income

Meaning of National Income


National income refers to the total value of all final goods and services produced within a country
during a financial year. It represents the overall economic performance of a nation and helps in
understanding the standard of living of people.

Importance of National Income


• Helps in measuring economic growth
• Useful for comparing living standards
• Assists government in planning and policy making
• Indicates structure of the economy

Concepts of National Income


1. Gross Domestic Product (GDP): Total value of goods and services produced within domestic
territory.
2. Gross National Product (GNP): GDP + Net factor income from abroad.
3. Net National Product (NNP): GNP – Depreciation.
4. National Income: NNP at factor cost.
Methods of Measuring National Income

1. Production Method:
Under this method, national income is calculated by summing up the value added by all production
units in the economy.

2. Income Method:
This method adds all factor incomes such as wages, rent, interest and profit earned during a year.

3. Expenditure Method:
National income is calculated by adding total expenditure on final goods and services such as
consumption, investment, government spending and net exports.

Difficulties in Measurement
• Existence of non-monetized sector
• Inaccurate data
• Double counting
• Lack of proper records

Thus, national income is a crucial indicator of a country’s economic health.
