NARRATIVE TEXT
Narrative text Adalah cerita fiksi atau cerita karangan yang dibuat untuk menghibur
pembaca. Narrative text biasanya kita jumpai dalam bentuk dongeng, cerita rakyat, maupun
cerita fiksional lainnya. Narrative text terdiri dari kejadian berurutan yang mengarah ke dalam
suatu klimaks, dan akhirnya menemukan suatu penyelesaian. Narrative text bertujuan untuk
menghibur pembaca atau pendengar.
Generic Structure
1. Orientation.
Berisi tentang pembukaan cerita yang mengandung pengenalan tokoh, pengenalan latar
belakang waktu dan tempat dari cerita. Mengandung bagian umum dari cerita yang
mencakup apa, siapa, kapan, dan di mana cerita tersebut diceritakan.
2. Complication.
Pada bagian ini, tokoh utama mulai mengalami konflik dalam kehidupannya dan harus
menyelesaikan konflik-konflik tersebut.
3. Resolution.
Bagian akhir cerita (ending). Dalam bagian ini biasanya terdapat pesan moral (moral
value) atau nasihat yang bisa kita ambil dari cerita tersebut. Moral value pada ending
sebuah narrative text disebut dengan Coda.
Penggunaan Grammar dalam Narrative Text
Dalam Narrative text biasanya menggunakan bentuk lampau atau Past, karena cerita ini
merupakan cerita karangan atau fiksi. Bentuk tenses bisa menggunakan past perfect, past
continuous, past perfect continuous, atau bisa saja past future perfect continuous. Semua
aturan ini tidak harus dijadikan sebagai acuan karena tenses itu mengacu kepada kondisi dan
situasi kalimat.
Ciri - Ciri Narrative Text
Menggunakan Action Verb dalam bentuk Past Tense. Misalnya : Walked, Said, Wondered,
dsb.
Menggunakan Nouns tertentu sebagai kata ganti orang, hewan dan benda tertentu
dalam cerita. Misalnya : the princess, the girl, the queen, dsb.
Menggunakan adjective yang membentuk satu kesatuan noun phrase. Misalnya : The red
riding hood, the poisoned apple, dsb.
Menggunakan Time Connectives dan Conjunction untuk mengurutkan kejadian-kejadian.
Misalnya : before, after, then, next,soon, dsb.
Menggunakan Adverbs dan Adverbial Phrase untuk menunjukkan lokasi kejadian atau
peristiwa. Misalnya : on the sea, in the mountain, there, happily ever after, dsb
CONTOH NARRATIVE TEXT JENIS CERITA RAKYAT
The Story of Toba Lake
There once lived a poor farmer named Toba in one village of North Sumatera. One
day, he went fishing. Luckily, he got a beautiful goldfish. He carried it home then planned to
cook it. When he got home, the fish turned into a beautiful woman.
The woman told him that she was cursed and asked Toba to keep it as a secret. Toba
agreed only with one condition that she would marry him. Then they got married had one
child named Samosir. This boy liked to eat much food.
One day, the mother asked Samosir to bring lunch to his father who worked in the
rice field. On the way to rice field, he stopped and ate most of his father's lunch.
Toba was very angry and shouted at Samosir “You, a child of a fish! You are so
greedy!” Samosir cried and ran toward his mother. He asked mother why father called him a
child of a fish.
The woman was really upset that Toba broke his promise. The mother's anger
causing springs appeared and soon made a vast lake. The lake is called Toba Lake. A island
in the middle of Toba Lake is called Samosir Island.
The Legend of Crying Stone
Once upon a time in Borneo, there lived a poor widow and her daughter. The girl was
really beautiful. However, she was very lazy and spoiled. She loved to dress up every day,
but never helped her mother.
One day, they went down to a village for buy something. A market was far away from
their house. They walked there.
The girl got dressed very nice and walked in front of her mother. While the mother
walked behind, carried a basket, wore dirty clothes. Nobody knew they were mother and
daughter.
While entering the nearby village, people looked at them. Young men were so
fascinated by girl’s beauty. However, she was in contrast to a woman walking behind her. It
made people wonder.
Some young men asked her whether woman was her mother. But the girl arrogantly
replied that the old woman was her maid. More people asked her along the way to market.
She gave a same answer that her mother was her slave.
Eventually, the mother was really hurt to hear her daughter’s answer. Mother prayed
to God to punish her ungodly daughter.
Suddenly, girl stopped then slowly turned to be a stone. The daughter cried
and apologized to her mother.
But it was too late. The pretty girl was turned into a stone forever but continued
to tear her regret to her mother.
