Basic First Aid Guide

First aid is the immediate care given to a person who is injured or suddenly ill. Knowing basic first
aid can help save lives and prevent injuries from getting worse.

1. Check the Situation


• Make sure the area is safe for you and the injured person.
• Check the person for responsiveness and breathing.
• Call emergency services if needed.

2. Treat Minor Cuts and Wounds


• Wash your hands if possible.
• Clean the wound with clean water.
• Apply an antiseptic and cover with a clean bandage.

3. Burns
• Cool the burn under running water for 10–15 minutes.
• Do not apply ice, butter, or toothpaste.
• Cover loosely with a clean cloth.

4. Nosebleed
• Sit the person upright and lean them forward.
• Pinch the soft part of the nose for 10 minutes.
• Do not tilt the head back.

5. Sprains and Strains


• Rest the injured area.
• Apply ice wrapped in cloth for 15–20 minutes.
• Compress with a bandage and elevate if possible.

6. Choking
• Encourage coughing if the person can breathe.
• If severe, give abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).
• Call emergency services immediately.
