Project-Based Learning (PBL) – Assignment 1
Subject: Project-Based Learning (PBL) II
Semester: SE Computer Engineering
Assignment Title: Agro Planner Android App
Objective:
The objective of this assignment is to help students:
• Identify a real-world problem related to societal, technological, or industrial challenges.
• Conduct an initial feasibility study and research alternative solutions.
• Propose a structured plan for project implementation.
Assignment Tasks:
• Problem Identification
• Select a problem relevant to your domain (computer engineering)
In the agricultural sector, many farmers lack access to digital tools for efficient farm management
and crop planning. The absence of a centralized, mobile-based platform for planning agricultural
tasks, managing crop schedules, accessing weather forecasts, and tracking resource usage affects
productivity and decision-making.
In the agricultural sector, many farmers lack access to digital tools for efficient farm management
and crop planning.
• Justify the importance of solving this problem.
1. Reducing Costs and Wastage
Poor planning leads to overuse or underuse of resources like water, fertilizers, and pesticides. By
providing customized farming schedules, the app can help farmers optimize input costs, ensuring
sustainable farming practices.
2. Climate Change Challenges
Erratic weather patterns and climate change affect crop cycles. An Agro Planner app can provide
weather forecasts and adaptive strategies, helping farmers mitigate risks and increase resilience
against climate variability.
3. Market Connectivity
Many farmers struggle with selling their produce at fair prices due to a lack of market access. The
app can offer price tracking, direct buyer connections, and logistics support, ensuring farmers get
better returns for their crops.
Identify the target audience or stakeholders affected by the problem.
[Link] (Primary Users)
• Small-scale farmers: Need guidance on crop planning, weather updates, and resource
management.
• Large-scale farmers: Require data-driven insights for precision farming and efficient resource
allocation.
• Organic farmers: Benefit from eco-friendly farming techniques and sustainable planning
features.
2. Agricultural Advisors & Experts
• Agronomists and agricultural scientists who provide expert recommendations on soil health, pest
control, and best practices.
• Government extension officers who use the app to educate farmers and promote sustainable
agriculture.
3. Agri-Businesses & Input Suppliers
• Fertilizer, seed, and pesticide suppliers who can integrate their products into the app for smart
recommendations.
• Machinery providers who offer equipment rental services through the app.
4. Government & Policy Makers
• Agricultural departments seeking to improve food security and sustainability.
• Policy makers who want to promote smart farming techniques and support rural farmers.
• Literature Review
• Research existing solutions for the identified problem.
1. Farm Management Applications:
Farmbrite: This software assists with crop planning, yield projections, and visualizing farming seasons.
2. IoT and AI-Driven Solutions:
FarmBeats: Microsoft's FarmBeats integrates data-driven farming with farmers' knowledge, aiming to
increase productivity and reduce costs.
Compare and analyze at least three existing solutions.
• Identify the gaps or limitations in current solutions.
1. Lack of Comprehensive Integration
Gap: Most existing farm management solutions focus on one or two aspects of farming, such as crop
management, livestock management, or financial tracking, but they lack full integration across all areas of
farm management.
2. Usability and Access for Small-Scale Farmers
Gap: Many of the solutions, particularly Agri Webb, are designed for larger commercial farms and may
not be user-friendly or suitable for small-scale farmers or those with limited technical skills.
Proposed Solution Approach
• Describe the technical approach you plan to take.
To address the identified problem, we propose to develop an Android-based Agro Planner App that
provides farmers with a comprehensive farm management tool.
1. User-friendly Android Application: Develop a lightweight, easy-to-use mobile app accessible on
Android devices, suitable for farmers in rural areas.
2. Crop Planning Module: Allow farmers to plan their crop cycles based on soil type, season, and
weather conditions.
[Link] Integration: Integrate real-time weather APIs to provide accurate weather forecasts, which
will help farmers schedule farm activities effectively.
4. Database Integration: Use cloud-based or local databases to securely store user data, crop history,
and farm plans.
• Mention the tools, technologies, and methodologies to be used:-

Back end : PHP , Java.
Database: MYSQL
• Identify expected challenges and possible mitigation strategies.
Challenges:
• Limited Technological Literacy Among Farmers
• Low Smartphone Penetration and Internet Access
• Diverse Agricultural Practices and Needs
• Data Privacy and Security
