Ad's Motto and Intended Message Pepsi's "Live for Now Moments Anthem"

was designed to:

 Resonate with young people and promote Pepsi as a brand that fosters
peace and unity.
 Convey that Pepsi could bring people together, even in moments of
tension.
 Feature protests that appeared light-hearted and celebratory, implying that
sharing a Pepsi could resolve conflicts.
 Create an uplifting narrative, portraying Pepsi as a unifying force in a
divided world.

What the Ad Tried to Convey The advertisement attempted to portray a

positive and unifying message through the following key elements:
 A diverse group of young protesters marching with signs bearing vague,
feel-good slogans such as "Join the Conversation."
 Kendall Jenner, a high-profile celebrity, leaving her modeling shoot to
join the protest.
 The climax of the ad, where Jenner hands a can of Pepsi to a police
officer, who takes a sip, seemingly diffusing any tension.
 The protesters cheering in celebration, implying that Pepsi, as a global
brand, could play a role in solving social issues and uniting people.
However, instead of resonating with audiences, the ad quickly became a symbol
of corporate insensitivity.

BLM:
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a social movement that fights against racism and
police brutality, especially toward Black people. It started in 2013 after the
killing of Trayvon Martin and became a global movement after the death of
George Floyd in 2020. BLM protests focus on justice, equality, and stopping
racial discrimination in policing and society.
How the Pepsi Ad Was Connected to BLM
 The ad resembled real protests, including those led by the BLM
movement, but presented them in a light-hearted, unrealistic way.
 One of the most criticized moments was when Kendall Jenner handed a
Pepsi to a police officer. This scene reminded many people of a real-life
BLM protest where activist Ieshia Evans peacefully stood before heavily
armed police officers.
 The ad’s message—suggesting that Pepsi could resolve conflicts—was
seen as offensive because real protesters face serious issues like police
violence, arrests, and systemic oppression.
 Many felt that Pepsi was exploiting activism for profit rather than
genuinely supporting social justice causes.
 The controversy highlighted how brands must be responsible when
addressing social movements, ensuring they don’t trivialize important
struggles.

Public Reaction and Media Criticism

Despite Pepsi's positive intentions, the ad sparked immediate backlash, with
critics arguing that it minimized real-world struggles. The controversy unfolded
in the following ways:
 The ad was criticized for being an example of corporate brands using
social issues to sell products, a tactic that is often seen as fake and
insincere.
 In an article, the writer compared this to an old Coca-Cola ad from 1971,
which also used a message of peace and unity but worked better because
it did not pretend to be part of a real protest.
 Entertainment Weekly called the ad "a tone-deaf attempt to co-opt a
movement of political resistance."
 Many activists and social media users criticized the ad for depicting an
unrealistic protest experience.
 Many people felt that the ad trivialized serious social issues—like police
violence—by making them look like something small that a Pepsi could
fix.
 Bernice King, daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.,
sarcastically remarked, "If only Daddy would have known about the
power of #Pepsi."
 Marketing experts highlighted that Pepsi lacked a history of supporting
social justice causes, making the ad seem like an inauthentic attempt at
activism.
 Kendall Jenner personally faced significant criticism for her involvement.
 Her sister, Kim Kardashian, reportedly advised her to stay silent on the
issue initially.
 Kendall later expressed regret, claiming she had no intention of offending
anyone.
 The outrage was so strong that even mainstream media outlets dissected
the ad’s failures in marketing ethics and social responsibility.

Cause of the Problem

Several key factors contributed to the controversy surrounding the Pepsi ad:
1. Lack of Cultural Awareness – The ad depicted protests as cheerful
gatherings, failing to reflect their real gravity.
2. Misrepresentation of Activism – It suggested that social issues, like
police brutality, could be solved by simply sharing a Pepsi.
3. Limited Expert Input – Pepsi's in-house creative team lacked diversity
and expertise in social justice messaging, leading to poor cultural vetting.
4. Unfit Choice of Influencer – Casting Kendall Jenner, a celebrity with no
activism background, made the campaign feel inauthentic.
5. Oversimplification of Issues – The ad trivialized real struggles by
portraying Pepsi as a magical solution to serious tensions.
6. Tone-Deaf Messaging – Instead of acknowledging real grievances, it
commercialized activism, making it seem like an exploitative marketing
stunt.
Company's Explanation and Response:
Pepsi issued a formal apology, acknowledging that the advertisement “missed
the mark” and stating that they had no intention of trivializing serious social
issues. The company also apologized to Kendall Jenner for placing her in that
position. However, while the apology was swift, many felt it was a generic
corporate response rather than a sincere acknowledgment of the deeper issues at
play.

Company’s action after the Controversy:

 Acknowledgment of Mistake – Pepsi admitted that the ad "missed the
mark."
 Clarification of Intent – The company insisted that they did not intend
to trivialize serious issues.
 Apology to Kendall Jenner – Pepsi publicly apologized for putting her
in that position.
 Swift Removal of the Ad – The company immediately took down the ad
and halted its distribution.
 Perceived Lack of Sincerity – Many critics felt the apology was a
generic corporate response rather than a genuine reflection on the deeper
issues at play.
 Reevaluating Marketing Strategies – Pepsi reportedly conducted
internal reviews to ensure future campaigns would be more culturally
sensitive.
 Shifting Focus to Product-Based Marketing – Following the backlash,
Pepsi moved away from politically charged advertisements and returned
to campaigns centered on entertainment and lifestyle themes.

Pepsi's full statement: "Pepsi was trying to project a global message of

unity, peace, and understanding. Clearly, we missed the mark, and we
apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are
removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for
putting Kendall Jenner in this position."
