Sentence Completion Task: Sociological Concepts at Work
I used to think that sociology is a branch of the social sciences that deals
with the study of society which makes it a broad field. It examines various
social institutions such as government, religion, media, among others. In
addition to social institutions, it also zooms in on culture and social norms.
Honestly, the expansive scope of sociology as a field of study makes it the
vaguest discipline for me among the social sciences. It seems like sociology
intersects with various social sciences such as history, political science, and
anthropology.
Now, I know that sociology is a modern conception. Unlike the disciplines
of history and political science which have existed since the times of Ancient
Greek and Roman civilizations, the origins of sociology can be traced to the
aftermath of French Revolution of 1789 that solidified the triumph of secular
values and offset of the Industrial Revolution that brought great social and
economic transformation. These turbulent upheavals led August Comte to
establish sociology as a new discipline that seeks to understand and study
society through unifying the lens of history, psychology, and economics
(Giddens, 2001). The early development of the field can be contributed to
the ideas of Emile Durkheim (e.g., sociology as a study of social facts and
social and moral solidarity), Karl Marx (e.g., materialist conception of history,
capitalism, and class struggle).
