In today’s digital era, many students increasingly prefer interacting
through online platforms rather than communicating face to face. I firmly
believe this trend is negative because it weakens their real-life
relationships and hinders the development of essential communication
skills.
The primary drawback to this trend is that excessive reliance on virtual
communication can gradually erode meaningful interpersonal
connections. When students spend most of their time chatting through
messaging apps or social networks, they tend to reduce the amount of
time they engage in direct conversations with their peers, teachers, and
even family members. Over time, this shift results in emotional distance
and a lack of genuine understanding, as online messages cannot fully
convey tone, emotion, or non-verbal cues. For example, a recent school
survey found that students who spent more than four hours a day
communicating online reported feeling less comfortable initiating face-to-
face conversations, even with close classmates. This explains why many
teenagers today feel disconnected from the people around them despite
maintaining an active online presence.
Another significant concern is the deterioration of students’
communication abilities. Online conversations are typically short,
fragmented, and dependent on emojis or abbreviations, which limits
opportunities for students to express ideas clearly and confidently. As a
result, many learners find it difficult to maintain eye contact, interpret
body language, or engage in structured discussions - skills that are crucial
for academic performance, future careers, and social interaction. This
issue becomes even more apparent during group presentations or
classroom debates, where students who are active online often struggle to
articulate their thoughts effectively in person.
In conclusion, the shift toward online communication represents a largely
harmful development. Its tendency to undermine students’ social
connections and hinder the growth of vital communication skills makes it
a concerning trend for their personal development and long-term success.
