The Library That Opened at Midnight
Everyone in town knew the library closed at six—everyone except Mira.
One night, walking home late, she noticed a warm yellow light glowing behind the
dusty windows. Curious, she pushed the door open. Instead of silence, she heard
whispers—hundreds of them.
Books floated gently through the air, opening and closing as if breathing. A clock
on the wall struck twelve, and the librarian appeared, smiling like she’d been
waiting forever.
“This library opens only for people who need a story,” she said.
Mira reached for a book with her name on the spine. When she opened it, the pages
were blank—until words began writing themselves.
They told the story of who she could become: brave, uncertain, learning, trying
again.
When the clock struck one, the books settled back onto the shelves. Mira stepped
outside, the light gone, the door locked.
But in her pocket was a library card with today’s date.
She smiled. She knew she’d be back—when she needed it most.
(and she woke up the next morning realising she was in a looney bin)
