and human connection in modern society.

This topic has been chosen in reference to the the lesson, The Rattrap, by Selma
Lagerlöf.
In selecting this lesson for my survey, I aimed to highlight how the feelings of
loneliness and emotional isolation reflected in literature are still highly relevant
today. The protagonist is a poor man who wanders the countryside selling small
wire rattraps that he makes himself. Because his business is not profitable, he
often resorts to begging and petty thievery to survive.
The core philosophy of the story conceived by the peddler is that the entire
world is a massive, inescapable rattrap. The peddler's journey is one of moral
conflict, where his initial greed and cynicism are ultimately conquered by the
transformative power of human compassion. In the story, the ironmaster and the
crofter's kindness was either accidental or easily exploited, Edla's compassion is
genuine, empathetic, and unwavering. The transformative power of kindness
and compassion is the most powerful philosophy in the story. It can break the
barriers of isolation and bring out the goodness that exists within everyone.
In the Rattrap, Edla's kindness is the new and positive change. It offers him
dignity, respect and a chance for redemption which the peddler had never
experienced. By treating him like Captain von Stahle, she gives him the power
and self-respect to become a better person. The story uses the philosophy of the
"rattrap" to set the stage for its optimistic conclusion, that kindness is the most
powerful force in the world that capable of transforming a trapped soul and
freeing them from the chains of isolation and form genuine connections.
