Introduction
A consumer is a person who buys goods or services for personal use. Consumers play a very
important role in the economy. Consumer rights protect consumers from unfair trade
practices and exploitation. Awareness of consumer rights helps people make informed
decisions.
Need for Consumer Rights
Consumer rights are needed to protect consumers against exploitation by sellers and
manufacturers. Consumers may face problems such as adulteration, defective goods,
overcharging, and misleading advertisements.
Consumer Movement
The consumer movement began as a social movement to protect consumers from
exploitation. In India, it gained strength in the 1960s. This movement led to the formation of
consumer organizations and the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act (COPRA) in
1986.

Consumers can become aware of their rights through education, advertisements,

consumer courts for redressal of grievances.
