🎯 Learning Outcome
After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

 Prepare and load datasets in Power BI.


 Design interactive dashboards using multiple visualizations.
 Extract actionable insights from data through KPIs and visuals.

🧩 Scenario
As a Junior Data Analyst, you are required to create an interactive Sales Dashboard in
Microsoft Power BI Desktop using the provided dataset:

✅ Tasks & Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Data Preparation (1 Mark)

Steps:

1. Open Power BI Desktop.


2. Go to Home → Get Data → Excel Workbook.
3. Browse and open the file “PL Sales [Link]”.
4. Select all relevant sheets (usually “Sales” or “Orders”).
5. Click Load to import the data into Power BI.

2. Create Visualizations (5 Marks)

Now create the following visuals on one dashboard page.

a) Filled Map – State-wise Sales

 Drag State to Location field.


 Drag Sales to Values.
 Format map color gradient for better visibility.

b) Donut Chart – Region-wise Sales

 Insert Donut Chart.


 Drag Region to Legend.
 Drag Sales to Values.

 Insert Stacked Column Chart.


 Drag Year (from Date column, extract if needed) to Axis.
 Drag Sales to Values.

 Insert Pie Chart.


 Drag Category to Legend.
 Drag Sales to Values.

 Insert Funnel Chart.


 Drag Sub-Category to Group.
 Drag Sales to Values.

3. Dashboard Interactivity (1 Mark)

Steps:

1. Ensure all visuals are interactive.


2. Click any region or category — other charts should automatically filter.
3. You can check interactivity under:
o Go to Format → Edit Interactions.
o Make sure filtering is turned on for all visuals.

4. Insights & KPIs (1 Mark)

Steps:

1. Insert Card Visuals (under Visualizations pane).


2. Create three cards:
o Total Sales → Sum of Sales
o Total Profit → Sum of Profit
o Total Discount → Sum of Discount
3. Arrange them neatly at the top of the dashboard.

5. Formatting & Layout (2 Marks)

Tips for a professional look:


 Add a dashboard title, e.g., “📊 Company Sales Performance Dashboard”.
 Apply consistent color theme (use Power BI Themes → Customize current theme).
 Use background color (light grey or gradient).
 Rename visuals clearly:
o “Sales by State (Map)”
o “Year-wise Sales”, etc.
 Align visuals properly (use View → Snap to grid).
