INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION

Dorsogluteal site
Ventrogluteal site

1. Take medication to client's room


2. Set tray on a clean surface, not a bed; a tray containing the syringe,medication, two
Gallipots with a wet and dry swabs.
3. Identify the patient
4. Greet the patient and explain the procedure to the client.
5. Provide privacy
6. Wash your hands and clean gloves.
7. Select the site of injection by identifying anatomic landmarks.
8. Consider the amount and viscosity of solution being injected when choosing site.
9. Cleanse the area with alcohol swab using circular motion, cleanse from inside outward.
10. Expel Air bubble from syringe (some clinics suggest leaving small bubble at the top so
that all medication is expelled).
11. Using 2- track method, place client in a prone position (This provides the best
perspective for identifying landmarks: posterior superior iliac crest and greater
trochanter)
12. Clean with alcohol swab
13. Pull skin 1 - 11/2 inch laterally away from Injection site.
14. In darting motion, insert needle at 90° angle.
15. Using your thumb and forefinger of your non-dorminant hand to hold the lower end of the
syringe as soon as the needle is in place.
16. Slide your dorminant finger to the end of the plunger.
17. Aspirate by slowly for at least 5 seconds pulling back the plunger to determine whether
the needle is in the blood vessel.
18. If blood is aspirated, discard the needle syringe.
19. If no blood is aspirated, inject the Solution slowly for 10 seconds per ml of medication.
20. Once medication has been instilled wait for 10 seconds before withdrawing the needle.
21. Withdraw the needle steadily and smoothly at the same angle at which it was inserted.
22. Apply pressure on the site using a dry swab.
23. Remove glove, perform Hand hygiene.
