Problem 1
For the beam below:
1) Determine the maximum shear stress in the wide-flange beam, where the shear
force is maximum.
2) Using the maximum shear force, determine the shear stress on the web at point A.

Step 3. Get the moment of area
Maximum shear stress is at the middle of the section

Problem 2
Two wrenches are used to tighten the pipe. If 𝐏 = 𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐍 is applied to each wrench, determine the
maximum torsional shear stress developed within regions AB and BC. The pipe has an outer diameter of
25 mm and inner diameter of 20 mm. Sketch the shear stress distribution for both cases.

In member BC:

Remember your lectures !
We have seen that an axial force Fz creates an axial stress (σz), which in turn
causes an axial strain (𝜀z).

Remember your lectures !
We have seen that a shear force dT leads to a shear stress (𝝉), which in turn
causes a shear strain (𝛾) which is an angle.

In the same manner as in axial and in shear loading, see below:
Whenever there is torque (T), there is a shear stress (𝝉), and whenever there is 𝝉,
there is an angle of twist (∅) which is form of deformation or strain.
