EXCUTIVE SUMMARY
This report outlines my industrial attachment experience at Gatundu Level 5
Hospital where I was assigned to various departments including the outpatient
Department,Library,Comprehensive Care Centre, Non-Communicable Diseases
and Maternal and child Health [Link] attachment aimed to expose me to
practical healthcare operations,enhance my professional skills and bridge the gap
between theory and [Link] report details the hospital’s profile,departmental
functions,my duties gained,challenges faced and recommendations.
INTRODUCTION
Industrial attachment is an essential component of professional training, providing
students with hands on experience in real work environments. My attachment at
Gatundu Level 5 Hospital offered me the opportunity to apply classroom
knowledge in a healthcare setting,interact with patients and professionals and
understand the operational dynamics of a public hospital.

HOSPITAL PROFILE
Gatundu Level 5 Hospital is a government referral facility located in
Gatundu,Kiambu [Link] offers a wide range of medical services including
outpatient care,inpatient services, specialized clinics,laboratory services,imaging
and public health programs. The hospital serves as a referral center for surrounding
health facilities and plays a key role in community health outreach.
DEPARTMENT PROFILES
OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT
Handles initial patient consultations,triage,diagnosis and treatment for non-
admitted cases.
LIBRARY
Provides access to medical literature,journals and references materials for staff
and students.
COMPREHENSIVE CARE CENTRE
Specializes in HIV/AIDS care,treatment,counselling and follow-up services
NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES CLINIC
Manages chronic conditions such as diabetes,hypertension and cardiovascular
diseases
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH UNIT
Focuses on antenatal,postnatal,immunization and child welfare services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES DURING
ATTACHMENT
Assisting in patient registration and record management.
Supporting triage and basic vital signs measurement.
Observing and assisting in patient consultations.
Organizing and retrieving reference materials in the library.
Participating in health education sessions.
Assisting in data entry and reporting in Comprehensive care centre and in the
library.
Supporting immunization and maternal health programs in Maternal and Child
Health.
Scheduling the patient’s next appointment.

Learning and applying hospital procedures,gained hands on experience with
records management protocols,coding,indexing and archiving.
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED
Limited storage space in archives resulting in difficulty organizing older
records.
Limited number of health records officer making work load over whelming.
Language barrier between the patients and the health records officers.
Poor network while using the electronic systems to retrieve or store patient’s
information.
RECOMMENDATION
Increase archive space or implement site archival solutions with clear retrieval
protocols.
Formalize trainee orientation and a competency checklist so future trainees
reach basic tasks faster.
CONCLUSION
The three month attachment in the Health Records and Information Management
Department at Gatundu level 5 Hospital provided me with important practical
skills and real work experience.I was able to apply what I have learned in
class,understand how different hospital departments operate and grow
professionally through the support of the [Link] attachment prepared me for my
future career and strengthened my interest I health sector.
