PROPS:
- The main thing is to make a boat (not a real
one). How? Find something that slides or is on
wheels; Moana/Maui are going to be behind it
rather than inside it. I used a partition gate on
wheels from the school car park. I stuck on future
board (card will do) on both sides. On one side I
painted with decoration in the style of Moana’s
father’s boat. On the other side I painted it
differently for Maui’s boat
and it was just turned around
on stage depending upon which
boat was in the scene. I attached a wooden pole and
some material for a sail. - Clay/old cooking pot.
- Wooden walking stick
for grandma Tala
- Maui’s magic fish hook
(you can cut out the
shape from future
board or card).
- Waves: Make from long
strips of blue
material connected to
a square wooden frame.
- A magic heart (I used a wooden heart model from
the science department). You can make out of card.
You’ll need a box to put it in too (I used a small
cardboard box, students decorated it).

SOUND FX:

You can download a variety of really useful sound effects

COSTUMES:

It’s an island/ocean setting, so the simplest way is

Hawaiian style – think flowery shirts, Bermuda shorts,
grass skirts, bright colours.

Moana!!

SCENE 1 [GRANDMA TALA TELLS AN OLD STORY]

GRANDMA TALA
At first there was nothing but ocean. Then one day
mother-island was born: Princess Fiti. Her heart was
so powerful. It could create new life.
But bad people wanted to take Princess Fiti's heart.
One day, Maui, a wizard with a magic fish hook, came
and stole Princess Fiti's heart. Without her heart,
our island, Fiti, went into a terrible darkness.
Maui escaped, but a devil, Te Ka, wanted the heart
too and there was a big fight. Maui lost his magical
fish hook and the heart of Princess Fiti was lost in
the ocean. Now, 1000 years later, Te Ka is still
looking for the heart. One day, the heart will be
found by someone who travels away from Fiti and

gives the heart back to our Princess. So… [Chief Tui
stands up and interrupts]
CHIEF TUI
Enough!
MOANA
Daddy!
CHIEF TUI
Nobody leaves the island. There is no darkness!
There is no devil! Only storm and big waves on the
ocean. We are safe on Fiti.
GRANDMA TALA
Not true. Someone must go.
[Villagers leave the stage, clear cooking pot, bring boat
to edge of stage. Moana, Chief Tui and Sina remain on
stage].
[End of scene 1]

SCENE 2 [MOANA TRIES TO LEAVE BUT FAILS]

NARRATOR 1
Grandma Tala was correct. There was a darkness. Fish
were dying and there was no rain.
NARRATOR 2
Without water people could not grow crops.
Without vegetables and fish there was no food to
eat.
NARRATOR 3
Everyone was hungry. Chief Tui did not know what to
do.
NARRATOR 4
Moana decides she must leave the island. She must
search for the heart of the princess.

©2019 Hi-Point 5
MOANA
Daddy, I am leaving.
CHIEF TUI
No, you must not go. You do not understand. The
ocean is very dangerous.
MOANA
Daddy, I am not a child. I am a teenager!
CHIEF TUI
Moana, a long time ago… Never mind. No-one leaves
the island. [Chief Tala walks away]
MOANA
Why does my father not understand me?
SINA
Because once he was like you. One time he tried to
leave with your uncle.
MOANA
What happened?
SINA
Big waves hit their boat. Your father swam back to
the island, but your uncle died.
MOANA
Oh dear! I didn’t know.
SINA
Now you understand. Your father is trying to protect
you.

[Sina exits stage]

NARRATOR 1
Now Moana was scared and confused.

©2019 Hi-Point 6
NARRATOR 2
Should she stay or should she go?
NARRATOR 3
Moana decided she would go. She used her father’s
boat but the waves were too big.
[Move boat further in stage. Moana gets behind boat. Wave
carriers enter and make waves. Play ocean background
sounds]
NARRATOR 4
Boat gets pushed back to edge]
The big waves pushed Moana’s boat back onto Fiti
Island. She lay on the beach, tired and
disappointed. She had failed.
[End of scene 2]

SCENE 3 [GRANDMA TALA GIVES MOANA THE HEART]

[On stage is Moana. Villagers and Wave makers move
on to stage too to prepare to dance. Grandma Tala
will enter after the song].
NARRATOR 1
So, the ocean had been too strong for Moana.
NARRATOR 2
Moana was feeling sad.
[Play song How Far I’ll Go by Auli'i Cravalho.
Moana lip syncs, villagers and wave makers dance
– Wave cloth can be held by two people and raised and
lowered in time to music. You can put a chair behind the
boat for Moana to stand on while she lip syncs, Titanic
style! After song villagers and wave makers exit. Grandma
Tala enters]
NARRATOR 3
Moana’s father was very angry with her.

©2019 Hi-Point 7
NARRATOR 4
But her grandmother came to see her. She had an
important gift for Moana.
GRANDMA TALA
Moana, come here. I have something for you.
MOANA
Leave me alone, grandma. I feel so stupid.
GRANDMA TALA
Come, open the box, it’s something special. [Moana
decides to open the box, she holds up what’s
inside].
MOANA
It’s a heart. Yuk, I hate blood. So much blood. Yuk!
Yuk!...
GRANDMA TALA
Moana, calm down! This is a very special heart. It
is the heart of Princess Fiti.
MOANA
Did you steal it?
GRANDMA TALA
Let’s just say I’ve been looking after it. Take it
on your journey. It will give you the power you need
to survive on the ocean. Find the princess. Give the
heart back to her. Save us from darkness.

MOANA
Oh! Thank you grandma. I will, I promise.
NARRATOR 1
So once again Moana left the island. [Moana goes
behind boat. Hei Hei ducks down behind boat too]
NARRATOR 2

©2019 Hi-Point 8
Once again she stole her father’s boat,
NARRATOR 3
[Wave carriers enter, play ocean sounds]
Once again the big waves came...
NARRATOR 4
But this time Moana had the power to get away from the
island. Now she was searching for her princess.
[Boat moves across the stage, waves fade away]

SCENE 4 [SHIPWRECKED BY A STORM]

[On stage Moana Hei Hei (hiding) and, at edge,Maui.]

NARRATOR 1
For some time, life on the ocean was good.
NARRATOR 2
The sea was calm, the sun was shining.
NARRATOR 3
[Wave carriers enter again, play storm, wind,
thunder sounds].
But then suddenly the wind changed. Dark clouds
gathered. Rain fell and the waves became the size of
tall buildings.
NARRATOR 4
The storm was too strong. Moana’s boat crashed into
rocks. Moana was shipwrecked on a small empty
island.
NARRATOR 1
When Moana woke up, she didn’t know where she was?
MOANA
Where am I? [Dizzy, not really awake]

©2019 Hi-Point 9
MAUI
[Runs on]
baby! You wanna party tonight?
MOANA
What? No! Who are you? Where is the box?
MAUI
You mean this box? [Shows the box]
MOANA
Yes, give it to me! [Moana opens the box] …It’s
empty. Where is the heart?
MAUI
You mean this heart? [Shows the heart]
MOANA
Hey! Give that back! That’s my heart. [tries to take
it, but fails]

MAUI
No, no, no… It is not your heart. You stole it.
MOANA
No, my grandma stole it.
MAUI
Your grandma? Would that be grandmother Tala? That
would mean you are Moana. You were just a baby when…

MOANA
When what?
MAUI
When I came to your island to… Um, for a holiday.

©2019 Hi-Point 10
MOANA
A holiday? You’re a liar. The last time a stranger came to
Fiti was… [gasp of realization!] Oh no, you’re Maui! You
are a monster, but I am not scared of you. Where is your
magic fish hook? At the bottom of the ocean?
MAUI
Clever girl. But anyway, I’m leaving now. Thank you
for the heart.

MOANA
I’m coming with you.
MAUI
You don’t have a boat.
MOANA
I will sail with you in your boat.
MAUI
No, sorry. Enjoy [name of island] island.
MOANA
I know where your magic fish hook is.
MAUI
You know where my fish hook is? Tell me.
MOANA
Take me with you and I will show you. Help me return
the heart to Princess Fiti.
MAUI
Hmmm… Okay, it’s a deal. But if you are lying, we
are both going to die. We will need the magic fish
hook. There are monsters.
MOANA
I’m not lying. You are lying. There are no monsters,
only storms.

©2019 Hi-Point 11
MAUI
Hmmm… Okay baby girl, if you say so, come on, let’s go.
MOANA
I’m not a baby, I’m a teenager! [Moana’s boat should
have been turned so the side of Maui’s boat is
showing. They get into Maui’s boat]

NARRATOR 1
So, Maui and Moana set sail together.
NARRATOR 2
Will they find Princess Fiti?
NARRATOR 3
Are sea monsters real?
NARRATOR 4
Let’s find out.
[end of scene 4]

SCENE 5 [KAKAMORA]
NARRATOR 1
The sea is calm.
NARRATOR 2
The weather is fine.
NARRATOR 3
But the journey to find the magic fish hook is long.
NARRATOR 4
And Moana is bored.
MOANA
[Playing with the heart, looking at it from
different angles] I’m bored. This boat is too slow.

©2019 Hi-Point 12
MAUI
Put the heart away. We don’t want anyone to see it.
MOANA
Out here on the ocean? There is nobody here. The
heart has GPS. It’s telling me where to go.
MAUI
Really? GPS?
MOANA
Yes, in 100 metres turn right.
MAUI
Aey Aey captain!
MOANA
[Kakamora enter and surround the boat]
Oh look! Coconuts in the sea. Yummy!
MAUI
No, Moana, be careful, they are not coconuts. They
are Kakamora!
[Play music Logo Te Pate by Olivia Foa'I… Kakamora
dance around the boat]

MAUI
[After song…]
Moana, put your seatbelt on, we’re getting out of
here!

[Boat moves to edge quickly]

[End of scene 5]

SCENE 6 [THE REALM OF MONSTERS]
[On stage Maui, Moana and HeiHei, plus Tomatoa is
sleeping at the edge in front of Maui’s fish hook;
place three boxes or stools on the stage for
“bungee”.]

NARRATOR 1
Maui and Moana arrive at the realm of monsters.
NARRATOR 2
It’s a small island.
NARRATOR 3
Everything is quiet.
NARRATOR 4
Nobody lives on the island.
MOANA
[Looking into the heart] The GPS says this is
[insert name of island above]. Your fish hook is on
this island.
MAUI
Really? I know this place, but it is not [name of
island above], this is the realm of mo… Never mind,
okay, it’s [name of island above]. Follow me.
MOANA
Where are we going?
MAUI
We have to do a bungee jump. But with no elastic.
MOANA
Bungee? With no elastic? Why?
MAUI
[Maui, Moana and HeiHei are standing up on the
boxes]

©2019 Hi-Point 14
Don’t ask questions. Just jump! [They jump off]
MOANA
Now where are we?
MAUI
Shh! Be quiet. You’ll wake him.
MOANA
Wake who?
MAUI
Tomatoa.
MOANA
Look! Your fish hook! Oh! And that must be Tomatoa.
TOMATOA
[Yawning, stretching, waking up] What time is it?
[Maui hides leaving Moana facing the monster. The
monster walks closer to Moana]
MOANA
Err… It’s late sir. Time for me to leave.
[Maui secretly creeps over to get his fish
hook]

TOMATOA
No, no, stay for some dinner please.
MOANA
Well, I am hungry. What are you cooking?
TOMATOA
Hmmm, I thought I might cook you. [Points at HeiHei]
MOANA
[Shocked] Yikes! Maui, use your fish hook!
[Maui waves the fish hook like a magic wand. Nothing
happens. Tomatoa laughs].

©2019 Hi-Point 15
MAUI
My fish hook is broken!
MOANA
Now what?
MAUI
RUN! [Maui, Moana and Hei run away; Tomatoa can
chase a little]
[End of scene 6]

SCENE 7 [TE KA]

NARRATOR 1
So Moana and Maui escape from Tomatoa.
NARRATOR 2
And Maui has his magic fish hook back.
NARRATOR 3
But Moana and Maui are arguing on the boat.
NARRATOR 4
And they forgot to check directions.
MAUI
My fish hook is broken. It didn’t work.
MOANA
Your fish hook is good. You are broken, not the hook. Why
did you hide from the monster? You are not a hero!
MAUI
I was a hero. I was a great man.
MOANA
Was! That’s the past! Be a hero now! Then your fish hook
will have magic again.

©2019 Hi-Point 16
MAUI
[Maui sits quietly thinking for a moment]. Moana, where are
we?
MOANA
GPS says this is the sea of Te Ka!
MAUI
Oh no! This is very bad. Do you know who lives here?
MOANA
No. Who?
TE KA
[Play thunder clap or explosion sound. Te Ka enters looking
fierce]
I live here. My name is Te Ka.
MAUI
[Speaks quietly to Moana] Te Ka means lava monster.
MOANA
I can see she is a lava monster. Be a hero please.
Fight her with your hook! Go on.
MAUI
Um, I don’t know she is kind of scary.
MOANA
Look out! [Te Ka attacks Maui and Moana. They fight, and
with magic from Maui’s fish hook, they defeat Te Ka]
MOANA
Wo hoo! We won. High five partner! [Moana and Maui high
five]
TE KA
[crying loudly] This is not fair.

©2019 Hi-Point 17
MAUI
Not fair. You lost! Unlucky!
TE KA
No. Not the fight.
MOANA
[Moana goes to sit next to Te Ka sympathetically]
What’s wrong Te Ka? Why are you so sad?
TE KA
I’m not a monster. I’m just angry. Someone took something
from me a long time ago. I have been a different person
since that day.
MOANA
Took what?
TE KA
My soul. My feeling. My…
MOANA
Your heart! Maui, give the box to Te Ka.
MAUI
Err, here. Sorry I stole this
TE KA / TE FITI
My heart! Now I am me again! [Changes into a princess with
a tiara]
MOANA
You are a princess! You are Princess Fiti!
TE FITI
Yes, and it is time for me to go home!

NARRATOR 1
So Princess Fiti returns home with Moana and Maui.

©2019 Hi-Point 18
NARRATOR 2
Maui is a hero once again.
NARRATOR 3
The crops can grow again and fish return to the sea.
NARRATOR 4
Moana has saved her people.
ALL NARRATORS
