GOD’S CREATION:
MAN IN HIS OWN IMAGE & LIKENESS
INTRODUCTION

God’s creation is centered on

human beings. Among all of
creation, only human beings are
created in God’s image and likeness.
God bestows in them the capacity to
think and love, which mirror God.
Using this capacity, human beings
may come to the knowledge of God,
offer him praise and worship and
acknowledge his goodness. God was
so delighted with his creation,
especially with man and woman
whom he loved so much. Yet, they
disobeyed God’s command.

"God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female
he created them." Man occupies a unique place in creation. Moreover, we have a will to make our
own choices, but that will is not free in the full sense of that word. Again, we have a degree of
freedom to choose disobedience or obedience, but we are still Christ's regardless of our decisions,
and as such God may use us however he desires. Sin separates man and woman from the Creator
and their relationship with him. It distorts their dignity as created in his image and likeness. Sin
also disfigured their relationship with the rest of God’s creation.

At the end of the Module, the students should be able to:

1. Highlight the purpose of God on the creation of Adam and Eve;

2. Reflect upon the purpose of God in creating man in his own image and likeness;
3. Explain the role of man in the society;

God’s sharing of His Life to Man by creating them into His image and likeness. Furthermore, the
students should be able to demonstrate understanding that Man must attune himself to the Divine
Inspiration of becoming a real Christian by his humility and integrity.

 Topic 1
God Created Man and Woman
The Purpose of God in Creating Adam and Eve

According to Scripture, Adam and Eve were the first human beings on the planet. In
Genesis, we are told God “formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” This man, called Adam, was the first
human being. But God did not create Adam to be alone. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to
fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And
the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the
man…The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

Then something happened, a serpent entered the garden to tempt Adam and Eve. God
had given food from every tree in the garden, but commanded the man and woman not to eat from
the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Eve believed the serpent, ate of the fruit, then gave
to Adam who also ate of the fruit.

This event was catastrophic. Now known as the fall, God judged Adam and Eve for
disobeying his command. And true to his word, Adam and Eve began the process of death.
Adam and Eve died because of the fall, but the fall didn’t just affect them. Since their sin, every
other person born after them were plunged into rebellion against God’s order. That includes
you and every other human being you know. And this rebellion is also the reason we die today.

Lesson:

In the plain reading of Genesis 1–3, we learn that God created the
first two people: Adam and Eve. They were placed in the garden and
given everything they needed: food, work, companionship, and
fellowship with God as they walked with him in the cool of the day
(Genesis 3:8). It was perfect, almost.

Through Adam’s sin, DEATH came into the world (Romans 5:12).
But Jesus, somehow called as the ‘Last Adam’ demonstrated he has
POWER OVER DEATH. Jesus came, lived, was crucified, and rose from
the dead (Luke 24:46).

Those who are IN CHRIST will not have to suffer the eternal
consequences of sin. Through Adam sin entered the world, but
through Christ we can be saved from the punishment of sin.

In His Image and Likeness
The Image of God
Genesis 1:26-28 announces that human beings are made in the image of God:

Then God said ‘Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them rule
over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth.’
And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female
He created them.

Our worth is connected to our

Creator. If God is of great and
inestimable worth, then human
beings made in his image must
be of great value, too.

Our dignity is present in

creation, but also after the fall
into sin.

Lessons and Implications of Being Made in God’s Image

Lesson 1. There are no ordinary people.
There are no ordinary people. You have never met a mere mortal - C.S. Lewis, The Weight
of Glory

Implications:

The people you see every day, even the ones to whom you give little regard, are ones that
are going to live forever either under salvation or judgment. Even the most obscure person is not
ordinary in God’s eyes. Each one of us is unique with different stories of life, knowledge, skills,
talents, etc..

Anecdote:

 The poor in your community; classmates and teachers at school; friends and relatives
wherever they are; the front-liners; the workers in the business establishments; and all the peoples
you meet everyday even the strangers have all their own stories, special capabilities, and unique
identities.

Lesson 2. We should not focus on our sin for long without also noting God’s
grace and our own dignity.
The apostle Paul offers a different example. He never mentions the depth of his sin without
also mentioning God’s grace:

 1 Corinthians 15:9-10: “For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be
called an apostle… But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not
without effect.”

 1 Timothy 1:16: Paul calls himself the “foremost of sinners,” but also notes, “yet for this
reason I found mercy…that in me, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience…”.

Implications:

Today, some people focus on our dignity and self-worth without much mention of our
sinfulness. On the other hand, in the past and in many sectors of the present, the emphasis has been
on our utter unworthiness and sinfulness without any note of our dignity or God’s grace.

We can say the same. No matter what we have done, God’s grace works in us. To deny or
fail to acknowledge this truth is to say that God’s grace is in vain. We strive to overcome our
sinfulness as we persevere in becoming good. Never should we feel unworthy for we are made
worthy by the grace of God.

Anecdote:
Maggie lived a horrible life that made her name a subject of rumors and issues. To cover up this
identity, she tries to pretend as a religious woman. But as time goes by, she realizes that her horrible life
need to change for her own good. That pretentious religiosity became a value for her to learn. This made
her more spiritual which later on changed her life from horrible to holy. People may still see her pretending
and unworthy but in her heart, she believes that by the grace of God combined with faith and strong will
can change her for a lifetime.

Lesson 3. The restored image of God looks like Christ.

Romans 8:29 reminds us that we are being “conformed to the image of his Son.” Jesus is
the perfect representative of the image of God, and we are being made like him.

Implications:

 While the image of God remains after the fall, it is certainly marred and defaced. Our
individuality as created by God will shine even more brightly, and our gifts will reach their full
potential. We will also look like Christ.

Much more remains to be said on the image of God, but we need to begin to appropriate
the meaning and experience of this idea. If we do, we will see a revolution in our relationships and
in our vision of the “least of these.”

Anecdote:

There was once a boy named Bo who was a victim of molestation in his childhood. He
suffered much trauma as he grows older. Because of this bad experience, he projected such sexual
inclination towards pornography and lustful thoughts to others. Until such time, he entered a
rehabilitation center that changed his life as a whole. He was counseled and guided by the Word
of God. This helped him to move on and change his life. He started to bravely share his experiences
and became an inspirational speaker who inspired and helped many. Bo became a restored image
of God who projected Christ.

The Purpose of God for Us

The Divine and Ultimate Purpose of God for Mankind

The purpose for man’s existence is stated at both ends of Scripture.

1. He created man in His

own image and likeness
(Genesis 1:26-27)—language
that refers to offspring or
children (Genesis 5:1-3)—

2. Share dominion or
rule with Him over creation
(Genesis 1:28).

And at the end of the

Bible God says, “He who
overcomes shall inherit all
things, and I will be his God
and he shall be My son”
(Revelation 21:7). Again, the wording concerns shared rule with God over all creation in
submission to Him as His children.

Thoughts to reflect upon:

Man’s destiny is to be part of the Kingdom and family of God.

It is God’s desire that no human beings perish but that all come to
repentance so as to become members of His family as sons and
daughters in His Kingdom (2 Peter 3:9; 2 Corinthians 6:18).

As part of this process, God is now calling some individuals to inherit eternal life at the
return of Jesus Christ to the earth (1 Corinthians 1:26-28; Matthew 20:16; John 6:44; John 6:65),
with others to be called later.

Those being chosen now must accept Christ as their Savior, surrender their wills to God’s
will and strive with God’s help to overcome sin during their present lifetime (Revelation 3:21).

The Will of God vs. The Will of Man

What is the difference between God’s will and man’s will in salvation? When someone
chooses to believe in the Lord, do they believe by their own will or by God’s will?

The Bible says, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy
and blameless in his sight…” (Ephesians 1:4).

Both wills are involved when someone trusts Christ for salvation. God’s will is primary
and the human will is secondary. God desires all men to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4) and He provides
sufficient grace for each person to be saved. Hence, when someone trusts Christ for salvation, they
are not doing this on their own initiative or in their own will-power. Rather, they simply quit
resisting God’s grace and allow Him to save them. Those who persist in resisting God’s grace
will ultimately perish.
Thus, as one Christian theologian has observed, the difference between believers and
unbelievers is NOT to be found in the believers; it is to be found in the unbelievers.

The believer is one who simply allows God to save him (which is
God’s will and desire); the unbeliever is one who continues to
resist God’s grace.
