Guidelines for University Question Paper Setting

This document outlines the standard principles to be followed while setting university-level question
papers. The primary objective of a question paper is to assess students’ understanding, analytical
ability, and application of knowledge aligned with course outcomes.

A good question paper should maintain a balanced distribution of marks across units and Bloom’s
Taxonomy levels. Questions must be clear, unambiguous, and syllabus-oriented. Repetition of
questions or testing the same concept multiple times should be avoided.

Proper weightage should be given to different cognitive levels such as knowledge, comprehension,
application, analysis, and evaluation. Time allocation must be realistic.

Finally, the question paper should adhere strictly to university regulations regarding format and
mark distribution.
