Physics – Motion (B1)

1. Key Definitions (boxed)

● Distance: The length of the path travelled by an object (m).

● Displacement: The shortest distance from the initial to the final position in a specific
direction (m).

● Speed: Distance travelled per unit time (m/s).

● Velocity: Displacement per unit time (m/s).

● Acceleration: Rate of change of velocity (m/s²).

2. Formulas (boxed + SI units)

● Speed: v = \frac{d}{t}

● Acceleration: a = \frac{v - u}{t}

● Distance (uniform acceleration): s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2

3. Unit Conversions (with worked examples)

● 1 km/h = 0.278 m/s → Example: 72 km/h × 0.278 = 20 m/s

● 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h → Example: 25 m/s × 3.6 = 90 km/h

4. Diagrams (black & white)

● Distance–time graph (straight line + curve)

● Velocity–time graph

● Free body diagram (motion with forces)

5. Worked Examples

● A car accelerates from 10 m/s to 20 m/s in 5 s. Find acceleration.

a = \frac{20-10}{5} = 2 \text{ m/s²}
● Distance travelled in this time:

s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2 = 10 \times 5 + \frac{1}{2} \times 2 \times 5^2 = 50 + 25 = 75
\text{ m}

6. Practice Questions (Q1–Q10)

● Q1–Q7: Standard exam-style

● Q8–Q9: Structured, multi-step

● Q10: Challenge Q, clearly marked

7. Lined Answer Space

8. Solutions – immediately after each question (step-by-step, with examiner tips)

9. Notes Page – lined, 1 page

10. Summary Sheet – key formulas & SI units

⚡ Once this topic is done, we’ll move to Forces (B2) with the same structure.
I can start generating the full Q1–Q10 with solutions and diagrams for Motion in Word format
next.

Physics – Motion (B1)

Key Definitions & Formulas (boxed)

● Distance (m) – total path travelled.

● Displacement (m) – shortest path from start to finish, direction included.

● Speed (m/s) – v = \frac{d}{t}

● Velocity (m/s) – v = \frac{\text{displacement}}{t}

● Acceleration (m/s²) – a = \frac{v-u}{t}

● Distance under uniform acceleration – s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2

Unit Conversions (with worked examples)

● 1 km/h = 0.278 m/s → 72 km/h × 0.278 = 20 m/s

● 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h → 25 m/s × 3.6 = 90 km/h

Diagrams (Black & White)

● Distance–time graph (straight line / curve)

● Velocity–time graph

● Free body diagram showing motion with forces

Worked Examples

1. Car accelerates from 10 m/s to 20 m/s in 5 s. Find acceleration.

a = \frac{v-u}{t} = \frac{20-10}{5} = 2\text{ m/s²}

Distance travelled:

s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2 = 105 + 0.52*5^2 = 75 \text{ m}

Practice Questions (Q1–Q10)

Q1: A car travels 150 m in 10 s. Calculate its speed.

Answer space:

Solution:

v = \frac{d}{t} = \frac{150}{10} = 15 \text{ m/s}

Q2: A train moves at 30 m/s for 20 s. How far does it travel?

Solution:

s = v \times t = 30 \times 20 = 600 \text{ m}

Q3: A cyclist accelerates from 5 m/s to 15 m/s in 10 s. Find the acceleration.

Solution:
a = \frac{15-5}{10} = 1 \text{ m/s²}

Q4: Distance travelled under uniform acceleration: initial speed 2 m/s, acceleration 3 m/s²,
time 4 s.

Solution:

s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2 = 24 + 0.53*16 = 8 + 24 = 32 \text{ m}

Q5: A car moves at 20 m/s for 15 s, then 30 m/s for 5 s. Calculate the average speed.

Solution:

\text{Total distance} = 2015 + 305 = 300 + 150 = 450 \text{ m} \text{Total time} = 15 + 5 = 20
\text{ s} v_{avg} = \frac{450}{20} = 22.5 \text{ m/s}

Q6: A runner completes 400 m around a circular track in 50 s. Calculate the average speed.

Solution:

v = \frac{400}{50} = 8 \text{ m/s}

Q7: A car slows from 25 m/s to 5 m/s in 10 s. Calculate the deceleration.

Solution:

a = \frac{5-25}{10} = -2 \text{ m/s²}

Q8 (Structured): A car accelerates from rest at 3 m/s² for 6 s.

a) Calculate final velocity.

b) Distance travelled.

Solution:

a) v = u + at = 0 + 36 = 18\text{ m/s}

b) s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2 = 0 + 0.53*36 = 54\text{ m}

Q9 (Structured): A car travels 60 km in 2 hours. Convert speed into m/s.

Solution:

v = \frac{601000}{23600} = \frac{60000}{7200} \approx 8.33 \text{ m/s}

Q10 (Challenge Q): A 1200 kg car is moving at 72 km/h.

a) Convert speed to m/s.
