CFD ANALYSIS OF FLOW THROUGH A T-JUNCTION PIPE

-Denzil Dsouza

The purpose of doing this assignment is to get familiar with the simulation
software Ansys. The problem includes a t-junction pipe where it contains two
inlets and one [Link] simulation is made to calculate the temperature
changes and also the direction of flow when hot water mixes with the cold
water.

Problem Description

The problem consists of two pipes one with diameter of 150mm which has a
length of 800mm and another pipe of diameter 100mm joined perpendicular
at the center of large [Link] cold water flows through the large [Link] flows
with a velocity of 0.1./s with temperature of [Link] hot water flows
through the smaller pipe with velocity of 0.2m/s and with temperature of
373k.

Continuity equation, momentum equation and navier Stokes equation are the

standard equations used to calculate various parameters in the simulation.

Water is used as the working fluid in the above [Link] Reynolds

number is lower and hence the flow is laminar and therefore the laminar
model is used for this problem.
The meshing is done in default sizing.

After the meshing is done, the next step is evaluated where the initial
conditions are selected, certain known variables are initialized and boundary
conditions are given as input to the [Link] values are also given to the
software such as water speed, water temperature , water pressure etc.

PLOT

The below plot shows the no. of iterations the software has done to the
convergence occurred in the continuity , momentum and energy [Link]
shown in the diagram the solutions to the general equations converge at
160th iteration.

CONTOURS

The above is the contour for the temperature. Its a model that shows
the temperature variation before mixing ,while the water is mixing and
how it flows later and The change in flow direction etc. As shown ,the
mixing takes place at the interface where cold and hot water meet.
There is a gradual decrease in temperature as we go with the flow. The
temperature after mixing lies in a range of 344k and [Link] is the
temperature range for the water exiting the outlet.
