polyatomic ions containing oxygen (oxoanions).
•Used for
•“–ate” means the ion has more oxygen atoms.
•Examples:
•SO₄²⁻ → sulfate
•NO₃⁻ → nitrate
•CO₃²⁻ → carbonate
3. –ite
•Used for polyatomic ions containing oxygen, but with fewer oxygen atoms than –ate.
•Examples:
•SO₃²⁻ → sulfite
•NO₂⁻ → nitrite
