Overview of the Endocrine System

The endocrine system regulates body processes by releasing hormones into the bloodstream, maintaining homeostasis. Key roles include growth, metabolism, reproduction, stress response, mood regulation, and blood sugar control, with major glands like the pituitary, thyroid, and pancreas playing crucial roles. Hormones travel to target organs, and the system adjusts hormone production to restore balance, exemplified by the negative feedback mechanism in blood sugar regulation.

Endocrine System

Function:
The endocrine system controls and regulates body processes by releasing hormones into the
bloodstream. These hormones help maintain homeostasis (balance in the body).

Key Roles of the Endocrine System

● Growth and development

● Metabolism (how the body uses energy)

● Reproduction

● Response to stress

● Mood and emotions

● Blood sugar regulation

Major Endocrine Glands & Their Hormones

Gland Location Hormone(s) Main Function(s)

Pituitary (Master Base of brain Growth hormone, Controls other glands;

Gland) others stimulates growth

Hypothalamus Brain Releasing hormones Connects nervous system to

endocrine system

Thyroid Neck Thyroxine (T3/T4) Controls metabolism, heat

production, energy

Parathyroid Neck (behind Parathyroid hormone Regulates calcium levels in

thyroid) blood and bones

Adrenal Glands On top of Adrenaline Stress response (“fight or

kidneys (epinephrine), cortisol flight”), blood pressure control

Pancreas Near stomach Insulin, glucagon Regulates blood sugar levels

Ovaries (females) Pelvic area Estrogen, Controls menstrual cycle,
progesterone female traits

Testes (males) Scrotum Testosterone Controls male traits, sperm

production

How It Works

Hormones travel through the bloodstream to target organs.

When the body has too much or too little of a hormone, the endocrine system adjusts
production to restore balance.

Example of Hormone Regulation

When you eat food → blood sugar rises → pancreas releases insulin → blood sugar
decreases back to normal.

This is called negative feedback, a common regulation method.
