Context: The community action board from your neighborhood is applying to My hood, my heart, a
program created by the mayor’s office to support residents leading projects and initiatives to promote
a better use of public spaces in their area. You are part of the team in charge of the project!
Task: By the end of the course, you will create a written presentation describing the most emblematic
places and activities from a neighborhood. You will select a place from the neighborhood that should be
the focus of the project and you will also describe the changes suggested for the place and the impact
it might have in the community.

Proposal from La Villa
Dear My hood, my heart committee,
We are the community action board from La Villa, one of the most emblematic neighborhoods of the city. We are writing
you on behalf of the other residents to present a proposal to improve the use of common spaces in our neighborhood.
We are aware of the great privilege we have by been able to experience direct contact with nature, open spaces for
working out and walking our pets; convenient market areas including supermarkets, drugstores, pet shops, stationary
shops, video games stores, few clothing stores, and a small office complex. Also, our neighborhood offers a great variety
of bars, coffee shops, and restaurants; there is a wide range of fast-food places, but you can easily find vegetarian and
vegan options as well. Most of the places are pet-friendly, so you can bring your pet with you anytime!
One of the things we treasure the most about our neighborhood is the fact that it brings all kinds of people together.
During the sunset, the main square becomes a meeting place for families with young kids and pets, teenagers, college
students, young adults who get together with friends after work, older couples, young artists, bohemian people, music
lovers, and many more. We wish our neighborhood to continue to be an open space that values diversity in the best way
possible; then, one of our proposals is creating a community market, a monthly event where entrepreneurs living in La
Villa would be able to sell their goods or services to visitants and neighbors, a perfect opportunity to make connections
among our community.
We would also like our neighborhood to become a more sustainable place for residents and creating a small garden with
edible plants and trees that all neighbors can use for their own benefit would be a great strategy to promote eco-friendly
practices, healthier habits, and community work. Neighbors would oversee planting, watering, and growing the garden,
as well as distributing crops among all residents.
We believe that these two ideas can help us promote a better use of common spaces in our neighborhood and improve
the quality of life of those who live in the area.
