FRICTION AND ITS ROLE IN
TRANSPORTATION

FRICTION
Friction is a force that opposes the
motion (or the tendency of motion)
between two surfaces in contact.
Even smooth surfaces have
microscopic bumps. When they rub
against each other, these
irregularities resist motion, causing
friction.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT IN OUR
DAILY LIFE?
IMPORTANCE OF FRICTION IN DAILY LIFE
1. Helps Us Walk 🚶♂️
• Without friction between our feet and the ground, we’d slip and fall.
2. Enables Vehicles to Move and Stop 🚗
• Tyres grip the road because of friction.
• Brakes create friction to slow down or stop vehicles.
3. Allows Us to Hold Objects ✏️
• We can grip pens, books, or phones thanks to friction between our skin and the objects.
IMPORTANCE OF FRICTION IN DAILY LIFE
4. Makes Tools and Machines Work 🔧
• Rubbing hands in winter generates warmth due to friction.
5. Produces Heat 🔥
• Tyres grip the road because of friction.
• Brakes create friction to slow down or stop vehicles.
6. Without Friction... ❗
• Walking, writing, driving, or even sitting still would be impossible!
FRICTION IN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
1. Friction Makes Transportation Possible! 🚙
• Tyres grip the road using friction — this allows vehicles to move, turn, and stop safely.
• Brakes use friction to reduce speed or bring vehicles to a halt.
• Railway tracks and train wheels depend on controlled friction to avoid slipping.
2. Air & Water Transport ✈️
• Even airplanes and ships face air resistance and water drag, which are forms of fluid friction.
• Engineers design them to reduce this friction and improve speed and fuel efficiency.

ITS ADVANTAGES
1. It Helps Us Walk & Move ✨
• Without friction between our shoes and the ground, we'd slip with
every step!
2. Enables Braking in Vehicles ✨
• Brakes use friction to reduce speed or stop — crucial for safety.!
3. Makes Holding Objects Possible ✨
• We can hold a pen or a glass because friction keeps them from
slipping from our hands.
ITS ADVANTAGES
4. Useful in Tools and Machines ✨
• Friction is used in brakes, belts, gears, and clutches to transfer or
stop motion.
5. Generates Heat ✨
• Rubbing hands on a cold day? That’s friction converting motion
into warmth..!
Quick Thought:
• Without friction, nails wouldn't hold, matches wouldn’t
light, and vehicles couldn’t stop.
ITS DISADVANTAGES
1. Causes Wear and Tear 🛑
• Continuous friction between surfaces leads to damage of tyres,
shoes, machine parts, etc.
2. Reduces Efficiency 🛑
• In engines and machines, friction wastes energy as heat, lowering
performance.
3. Generates Unwanted Heat 🛑
• Excessive heat due to friction can overheat machinery, causing
failures or even fire risks.
ITS DISADVANTAGES
4. Opposes Motion 🛑
• Friction resists movement, making it harder to push, pull, or slide
objects.
5. Leads to Energy Loss 🛑
• Mechanical systems consume more power to overcome friction,
increasing fuel or electricity use.
Real-world Insight:
• Excessive heat due to friction can overheat
machinery, causing failures or even fire risks.
WAYS TO REDUCE FRICTION
1. Use of Lubricants 🛢️
• Oil, grease, or graphite form a thin layer between surfaces, reducing contact and friction.
2. Ball Bearings ⚙️
• These convert sliding friction into rolling friction, which is much smaller.
3. Streamlining 🚗✈️
• Vehicles are given smooth, curved shapes to cut through air or water easily — reduces fluid friction.
4. Polishing Surfaces 🪞
• Smoothening surfaces reduces roughness, helping them glide past each other more easily.
WAYS TO INCREASE FRICTION
1. Roughening the Surfaces 🪨
• Making surfaces rough or textured increases grip — useful for shoes, tires, sports equipment.
2. Using Tread Patterns on Tyres 🚙
• Grooved tires improve friction with the road, especially in wet or muddy conditions.
3. Applying Grip Materials 🧤
• Materials like rubber or sandpaper increase surface friction — used in gloves, mats, and tool handles.
4. Increasing Normal Force 🏋️♀️
• Heavier objects press down more, increasing friction. That’s why loaded trucks grip better than empty ones.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES OF FRICTION
WALKING
Friction between your shoes
and the ground keeps you
from falling.
BRAKES IN VEHICLES
Friction between brake pads
and wheels slows down or
stops a car.
WRITING
The friction between pen and
paper lets ink or graphite stick
to the surface.
CLIMBING OR GRIPPING
Your hands and shoes use
friction to grip ropes, poles, or
walls.
LIGHTING A MATCH
Striking a match creates heat
from friction, igniting the head
of the match.
CLEANING
When you scrub a surface,
friction helps remove dirt or
stains.
BONUS EXAMPLE (CREATIVE TWIST)
Tug of war is basically a friction battle between
your feet and the ground!

CONCLUSION
Friction is a force that silently shapes our daily lives. From helping us
walk and write to enabling vehicles to move and stop, it plays a crucial
role in everything around us. While it provides grip, control, and safety,
it can also be a source of energy loss, wear, and unwanted heat. In
transportation, friction is both a necessity and a challenge — we need
it for braking and stability, but also work to reduce it for speed and
efficiency. The key lies in smart control: reducing friction where it
causes losses, and increasing it where safety demands it. In the end,
friction may resist us, but without it, we’d quite literally go nowhere.
