Chemical Reaction Engineering Tutorial 6

The document is a tutorial for a Chemical Reaction Engineering course, focusing on two questions related to gas-phase reactions in different reactor types. The first question involves calculating the necessary volume for a CSTR to achieve 50% conversion, while the second question requires determining the reactor volume for 90% conversion in both a PFR and a CSTR for a specific reaction. Key parameters such as initial concentration, flow rates, and reaction rates are provided for the calculations.

Chemical Reaction Engineering

Tutorial – 6 07/09/23

Instructor: - Dr. Tarak Mondal

Ques.1 The elementary gas-phase reaction 2A → B is carried
out in a constant-volume batch reactor where 50%
conversion is achieved in 1 hr. Pure A is charged at an initial
concentration of 0.2 mol/dm3. If the same reaction is carried
out in a CSTR, what volume would be necessary to achieve
50% conversion for a feed molar flow rate of 500 mol/h and
an entering concentration of A of 0.2 mol/dm3?
Ques.2 The elementary gas-phase reaction is carried out
isothermally in a flow reactor.
(CH3)3COOC(CH3)3 → C2H6 + 2 CH3COCH3
The specific reaction rate at 50°C is 10-4 min-1 and the
activation energy is 85 kJ/mol. Pure di-tert-butyl peroxide
enters the reactor at 10 atm and 127°C and a molar flow rate
of 2.5 mol/min. Calculate the reactor volume to achieve 90%
conversion in:
a) PFR
b) CSTR
