GRADE 9 SCIENCE LESSON PLAN – LESSON 1

Topic: Cells: The Basic Unit of Life

I. Learning Competencies: - Identify and describe the structure and function of cells. - Differentiate
between plant and animal cells. - Explain the importance of cells in living organisms.

II. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Define a cell and explain why it is
called the basic unit of life. 2. Identify the parts of a plant and animal cell. 3. Explain the functions of major
cell organelles. 4. Compare and contrast plant and animal cells.

III. Materials: - Microscope (if available) - Prepared slides of plant and animal cells - Images or diagrams of
cells - Whiteboard and markers - Chart paper and coloring materials (for activity)

IV. Procedure:

A. Introduction (10 minutes) 1. Greet students and introduce the topic. 2. Ask students: "What do you
think makes up all living things?" 3. Show a short video or image of cells to grab attention.

B. Development (30 minutes) 1. Definition and Importance of Cells (10 min): - Explain that cells are the
basic units of life. - Discuss why cells are important to living organisms. 2. Structure of Cells (10 min): -
Present plant and animal cell diagrams. - Identify major organelles: nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane,
mitochondria, chloroplasts (plant), vacuoles, etc. 3. Comparison (10 min): - Highlight differences and
similarities between plant and animal cells.

C. Application (15 minutes) - Activity: "Draw and Label a Cell" - Students draw a plant or animal cell on
chart paper. - Label major organelles and write one function for each.

D. Conclusion (5 minutes) 1. Recap key points: definition of a cell, organelles, and differences between
plant and animal cells. 2. Ask students: "How do cells help living things survive?"

V. Assessment: - Class participation during discussion. - Observation of students’ drawings and labels. -
Short oral quiz: 1. Name three organelles and their functions. 2. Mention one difference between plant and
animal cells.

VI. Assignment/Homework: - Research and write a short paragraph about one interesting fact about cells.
- Prepare to present in the next class.
