SIMPLE COMPOUND COMPLEX

1. SIMPLE SENTENCE

🔹 Definition:

A simple sentence contains only one independent clause (a group of words with a subject and a
verb that expresses a complete thought).

🔹 Structure:

Subject + Verb + Object (optional modifiers)

🔹 Examples:

• She writes poems.


• He plays the guitar.
• The child was crying in the park.

🔸 It may have a compound subject or verb but only one clause.

Example with compound subject:

• Ram and Shyam went to school.

Example with compound verb:

• She cooked and served dinner.

2. COMPOUND SENTENCE

🔹 Definition:

A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by coordinating


conjunctions.

🔹 Structure:
Clause 1 + Coordinating Conjunction + Clause 2

Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS):

• For
• And
• Nor
• But
• Or
• Yet
• So
🔹 Examples:

• I was tired, but I finished my homework.


• She cooked dinner, and he washed the dishes.
• You can come with me, or you can stay here.

🔸 Each part must be able to stand on its own (independent clause).

3. COMPLEX SENTENCE

🔹 Definition:

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent (subordinate)
clauses.

🔹 Structure:

Main Clause + Subordinate Clause (or vice versa)

Subordinating Conjunctions:

• because, although, since, when, while, if, as, unless, even though, etc.

🔹 Examples:

• I stayed home because I was sick.


• Although it was raining, we went out.
• He completed the work before the deadline.

🔸 The subordinate clause cannot stand alone.

Transformation Examples

1. Simple → Compound

Simple: Being tired, he went to bed.


Compound: He was tired, so he went to bed.

2. Simple → Complex

Simple: On hearing the news, she fainted.


Complex: She fainted when she heard the news.

3. Compound → Simple

Compound: He finished the work and went home.


Simple: After finishing the work, he went home.
4. Complex → Compound

Complex: Though he is poor, he is honest.


Compound: He is poor, but he is honest.
