CHAPTER 3

DATA PREPARATION, SURVEYING AND DETAILS DRAWING OF THE

BAILEY BRIDGE

3.1. General
A total-station is an optical instrument used as a primary contrivance for
modern surveying. It is a combination of electronic theodolite (transit), an electronic
distance meter (EDM) and software running on an external computer known as a data
collector. Horizontal and vertical angles together with slope distances from the
instrument to the points to be surveyed can be obtained by using the total-station. The
angles and distances may be used to calculate the coordinates of actual positions of
surveyed points with the aid of trigonometry and triangulation. Surveying plays a vital
role in assessing the conditions of the bridge as it provides accurate spatial and
dimensional information and project planning.

3.2 Data Preparation for the Existing Bailey Bridge

The required data for surveying includes gathering background information
about the site, reviewing existing bridge drawings and previous survey records. All
field sheets, safety requirements, and equipment lists are obtained from Bridge
Department, Ministry of Construction and are organized to ensure smooth and
accurate data collection during the survey. This comprehensive preparation ensured
that all necessary resources and information are available to carry out the survey
accurately and effectively.
Elevation, foundation plan, spun pipe pile positions, detailed plans and
sectional views of abutment and pier of the existing Bailey Bridge are shown in figure
3.1 to 3.20. Table 3.1 shows the reduced levels (RL) of bed.

3.2.4 Calculation Procedure of Total-station

The calculation procedure of total-station is as follows:
1. Center and level the total station over a known point and measure the instrument
height (HI).
2. Aim at a known reference point and calculate the backsight azimuth to establish
the instrument orientation.
3. Record the horizontal and vertical (for zenith) angles, measure the slope distance
(SD), and note the prism height (HT) for the target point.
4. Compute the horizontal distance (HD) and vertical distance (VD) from the slope
distance (SD) using HD = SD × cos(V) and VD = SD × sin(V).
5. Calculate the coordinate shifts using ∆E = HD × sin(azimuth) and ∆N = HD ×
cos(azimuth).
6. Compute the elevation using Zp = Za + HI + VD – HT
7. Compute the point coordinate using Xp = Xa +∆E, Yp = Ya +∆N, and Zp from
the elevation formula.
8. Save the coordinates and proceed to the next point.

3.3. Measuring and Checking the Position of Spun Pipe Pile

The survey is carried out to identify the suitable site conditions necessary for
proper bridge design and to obtain accurate data for detailed cost estimation. It is also
conducted to gather the information required to prepare a reliable and realistic
construction time schedule.

3.3.1. Measuring and Checking Spun Pipe Pile at Abutment A1
