 Past Progressive 1

We use the past progressive to describe something in progress at a

specific time in the past.

In 2010, I was living in Sharm.

At 11 o’clock, Mona was waiting for Ahmed at the café.
Yesterday, I was studying English. I didn’t go to work.
This morning, Mona and Ahmed were having breakfast with Mohamed.
A year ago, I was living with my parents.
At nine last night, we were sleeping.

We also use the past progressive to emphasize the duration.

I was looking for you all day yesterday, Ahmed.

They were talking about their trip all night. I couldn’t sleep at all.
I was studying English all day yesterday.

 My Speech

I gave a speech in front of my class yesterday. I was

very nervous, and I was sweating a lot. Everyone was
bored. Even my teacher was bored! She was yawning
and using her phone. Some students were sleeping
on their desks. One guy was snoring. Other students
were doing their homework. I was holding my notes
in front of me, and my hands were shaking. I was
talking very fast. After I finished my speech, everyone
said it was very good. My teacher gave me a good
mark, but she told me to speak slowly next time.
 The Car Accident

I saw a car accident yesterday. I was standing on

the corner, waiting for the green light. The other
light changed from green to yellow. Then I saw a
sports car. The man driving the sports car was
driving very fast. He wanted to get through the
yellow light but it turned red. On the other street, a
tow truck started to move forward. The driver of the
sports car was trying to stop when he saw the tow
truck. He smashed into the side of the tow truck.
The man driving the sports car got out of his car
very slowly. He had a cut on his forehead. He was
stumbling around. The driver of the tow truck was
not hurt. Some people were helping the injured
man. The police arrived and took him to the
hospital.

Saturday
Ana and I got to London at 11:30 this morning. It was a very long flight from Sao Paulo. When we got off the plane, the first
thing we noticed was the cold – six degrees! I’m glad I brought a warm coat! In Sao Paulo, it was 35 degrees when we left.
Everything they say about Londoners is true! The people at the airport weren’t very friendly and they couldn’t understand
our English. And we couldn’t understand what they were saying. In the end, we took the underground from Heathrow
Airport to our hostel in Earl’s Court, near the centre of London. The hostel is full of young tourists from all over the world
and everyone was very friendly and helpful. We were very tired, so we decided to sleep for a few hours. Ana’s telling me to
get ready to go and eat, so I have to finish now – more tomorrow.

Sunday
Ana and I had our first experience of British food last night. We went to a little café near the hostel. We decided to try fish
and chips. It’s a typical British dish and it was delicious with a hot cup of tea (with milk!). Today we visited the British
Museum is amazing – there are lots of interesting things to see. We spent two hours there and only saw a few of them
rooms. We bought some sandwiches for lunch and then we went to Covent Garden market. There were lots of musicians
and magicians in the street. We had a lovely afternoon and Ana took lots of photos. You can see them on Facebook.
