Evaluation

Your tutorial coursework accounts for 25% of your overall course grade, consisting of:

• Attendance and Participation 10%

• News presentation 15%

Attendance and Participation

Attendance is required and constitutes part of your course grade. If you are unable to attend a
tutorial, please notify your tutor in advance. As our time is limited to 50 minutes, please be
punctual so that we can make full use of the time.

Those who are more than 5 minutes late will get marked down; those who are more than 15
minutes late will be counted as absent.

It is expected that, before coming to tutorial, you will have done the readings of the week and be
prepared to discuss the discussion questions. As this is an introductory course, tutorials are an
important time to get clarification on questions you may have. (Asking questions is also a form of
participation and often helps everyone gain a better understanding.)

News Presentation

Presentations are done individually. They should be 10 minutes in length (time will be strictly
enforced, so do practice), presenting on a recent news event or latest development in world
affairs. To broaden your global knowledge, the news should not have China/Hong Kong as the key
player and we encourage you to look at regions of the world and topics that you may not have
paid attention to before. News topics must get prior approval by the tutor. Be sure to ask at
least 7 days in advance. The most recent events are best, but at least should not go back in time
further than 3 months.

Presentations should 1) give basic background to the news event, 2) summarize what happened,
3) state the significance (if any) of the event, and 4) apply one theory (from main four theories)
from the course. You can say how the event either supports or contradicts the expectations of the
theory.

Students should

✓ post relevant news articles/video clips to a Moodle forum (“News articles and video clips”) …
✓ email your PowerPoint to Jennifer at jang@[Link]

… both at least 48 hours* in advance of your presentation. Failure to do so will result in


marks being deducted.
