Math 204 Week 4 ODE Problem Set

The document outlines the Math 204 Week 4 problems, including specific exercises from the textbook by Boyce, DiPrima, and Meade across different editions. It also presents additional problems related to second-order linear homogeneous ordinary differential equations (ODEs), including finding the Wronskian and general solutions. The document requires the application of concepts from differential equations to solve the stated problems.

Math 204, Week 4 Problems

Solve the following exercise problems from the textbook

by Boyce, DiPrima and Meade.

Global edition; Section 3.2 (pages 117-118):

4, 9, 12, 16, 18, 27, 31, 32, 34
(11th edition; Section 3.2 (pages 119-120):
4, 9, 11, 16, 22, 27, 31, 34)
(12th edition; Section 3.2 (pages 137-138):
4, 9, 11, 16, 22, 27, 31, 34)

Additionally, solve the following problems.

1. Consider a second-order linear homogeneous ODE

y ′′ + (sin t)y ′ + q(t)y = 0
for some continuous function q(t) : R → R.

Suppose y1 , y2 are two solutions of this ODE such that

W [y1 , y2 ](0) = 3.
Find the Wronskian W [y1 , y2 ](t).

2. Let us consider the second-order homogeneous ODE with constant coeffi-

cients given below.
9y ′′ + 8y ′ − y = 0
(a) Find a fundamental set of solutions y1 , y2 for this ODE.

(b) Find the general solution of this ODE.

(c) Verify that two solutions of the ODE are y1 (t) = et/9 and y2 (t) = −3et/9 .
Find a solution ϕ(t) of the ODE that cannot be written as
ϕ(t) = c1 y1 (t) + c2 y2 (t)
no matter what c1 , c2 ∈ R are.
