SUMMARY
This report presents a detailed account of my three-month industrial attachment at the Office of
the Governor, Makueni County, under the Department of Communication.
The report highlights the objectives of my attachment, the scope of my work, and the
experiences gained in line with my course of study: Language and Communication with IT.
During the attachment, I was involved in multiple activities including news writing, editing,
photography, videography, and script writing for county events. I also participated in preparing
official communication materials, supporting live media coverage, and contributing to social
media updates.
The attachment bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world practice. It
improved my communication skills, expanded my knowledge of multimedia production, and
enhanced my teamwork, time management, and professional etiquette.
The report is divided into six sections: the introduction, detailed experiences, summary and
conclusion, recommendations, and appendices.
vii
SECTION TWO: INTRODUCTION
2.1 Background
Industrial attachment is an essential requirement for undergraduate programs. It serves as a
bridge between classroom theories and real-world professional practices. For communication
students, attachment provides a platform to practice and refine their skills in writing, public
relations, editing, and multimedia production.
My attachment was undertaken at the Office of the Governor, Makueni County, specifically
within the Department of Communication. This department is tasked with managing official
communication between the governor, county government, and the public. It also works closely
with journalists, media houses, and the Council of Governors.
The Office of the Governor of Makueni County was established under the Constitution of Kenya,
2010, as part of the devolved system of governance aimed at enhancing public service delivery,
citizen participation, and accountability. The Governor serves as the chief executive of the
county, responsible for policy formulation, coordination of development programs, and
supervision of county departments to ensure effective service delivery.
Vision:
A center of excellence in coordination and management of devolved functions.
Mission:
To provide leadership, coordination, and policy direction in the management of devolution and
devolved service delivery for a high quality of life.
Core Values:
People-centred
Responsiveness
Integrity and Accountability
Creativity and Innovation
Efficiency and Effectiveness
1
Motto:
“Wauni wa Kwika Nesa na Ulungalu” — The will to do good with integrity.
Since its inception, the office has played a pivotal role in promoting socio-economic
development across health, agriculture, infrastructure, and public administration. The current
administration, led by H.E. Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, is committed to transparency,
inclusive governance, and sustainable development in service to the people of Makueni.
The office provided an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in both traditional and
digital communication.
2.2 Rationale
The main rationale was to gain hands-on skills in media and communication work, learn how
county governments disseminate information, and contribute meaningfully to the governor’s
communication team.
2.3 Objectives
General Objective:
To gain professional experience in communication-related tasks.
Specific Objectives:
To practice writing news articles and official press releases.
To edit official documents and media scripts.
To gain experience in photography and videography.
To learn teamwork, time management, and professionalism.
To understand communication dynamics in a government office.
2.4 Scope
The attachment covered news writing, editing, video recording, photography, script writing,
event coverage, and assisting in drafting speeches.
2.5 Importance of Industrial Attachment
Industrial attachment is important for students because it:
Exposes them to workplace culture and professional ethics.
2
Enhances employability skills.
Helps in bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Allows students to contribute meaningfully to organizational goals while learning.
3
SESECTION THREE: ATTACHMENT EXPERIENCES
This section provides a detailed narration of my experiences during the three-month industrial
attachment at the Office of the Governor, Makueni County. It highlights the various tasks I
undertook, the challenges I encountered, and the lessons I learned.
The attachment gave me exposure in multiple areas including news writing, editing,
photography, videography, script writing, public relations, and event coverage. The following
subsections provide a comprehensive account of these experiences.
3.1 General activities undertaken
[Link] departmental meetings and taking minutes
[Link] newsroom operations
[Link] in office duties such as filing and documentation
[Link] in planning sessions for county events
[Link] staff to press briefings and field assignments
[Link] senior communication officers to learn work ethics and culture
[Link] in preparing daily media schedules
[Link] in brainstorming sessions for communication strategies
3.2 Specific activities undertaken
[Link] Writing
One of my core responsibilities during attachment was drafting news stories about county
government activities. The stories covered a variety of events such as:
Public participation forums where residents discussed county budgets and development plans.
Project launches including water supply systems and road inaugurations.
Health awareness campaigns focusing on maternal health and nutrition.
Cultural events where the governor engaged with youth and women groups.
4
Each assignment required me to observe, take notes, and interview relevant stakeholders before
preparing an article. I learned to apply journalistic principles such as the 5Ws and H (Who,
What, When, Where, Why, and How) to ensure stories were clear, informative, and complete.
For instance, during a road project launch, I drafted a report highlighting:
Who officiated the launch (the Governor).
What the project entailed (upgrading a rural road to bitumen standards).
Where the launch took place (Mbooni Sub-County).
Why the project was significant (to ease transport of agricultural produce).
When it was expected to be completed (within 12 months).
These details helped ensure the story was factual and ready for publication on the county website
and social media platforms.
2 Editing
Editing formed a crucial part of my duties. I was tasked with reviewing press releases, speeches,
newsletters, and internal memos before they were published or disseminated.
The editing process involved:
Checking grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Ensuring clarity and conciseness.
Removing unnecessary jargon.
Confirming consistency in formatting and referencing.
For example, I helped edit the Governor’s speech for Madaraka Day celebrations. The original
draft contained long, complex sentences and heavy statistics that could easily lose the audience’s
attention. My role was to simplify sentences, restructure paragraphs, and ensure the speech
flowed logically while retaining its official tone.
This task sharpened my attention to detail and reinforced the principle that “good communication
is not just what you say, but how clearly you say it.”
3 Photography
Photography was one of the most practical and exciting parts of my attachment. I covered
numerous events where I captured images of:
The Governor addressing residents.
Ribbon-cutting ceremonies during project launches.
5
Residents benefiting from county programs such as water projects.
Performances and cultural dances during festivals.
The communication team emphasized that a picture should not only capture an image but also
tell a story. For instance, when photographing a newly completed water project, I was
encouraged to capture children fetching water from the new borehole while smiling this
conveyed the impact of the project more powerfully than words alone.
Through guidance from senior officers, I learned practical skills such as adjusting shutter speed,
using natural light effectively, and positioning myself strategically during events.
4 Videography
In addition to photography, I assisted in recording videos of county functions. Videography
required not only technical skills but also creativity in framing shots and editing.
Some of the videos I participated in included:
Short clips of speeches by the Governor.
Documentaries of county development projects.
Public service announcements shared on social media.
I learned how to:
Operate video cameras under different conditions.
Use tripods for stability.
Edit raw footage into short, engaging clips.
Add captions and subtitles for clarity.
For example, during the launch of a new health program, I recorded short interviews with
mothers who had benefited from county-sponsored maternity services. These clips were later
compiled into a 3-minute highlight video that was shared on Facebook and received positive
feedback from the public.
5 Script Writing
Script writing was another area I gained practical skills in. I was involved in preparing scripts
for:
Video narrations explaining county projects.
Official speeches for the Governor and senior officers.
Event programs that guided ceremonies.
6
One memorable task was helping draft the narration for a documentary on Makueni’s clean water
initiative. The script had to be simple, persuasive, and aligned with visuals. I learned to write for
both the ear (spoken narration) and the eye (captions and subtitles).
This task improved my ability to write concisely while considering the intended audience.
6 Event Coverage
Covering county events was a team effort that involved planning, execution, and post-event
reporting. My role included:
Taking notes during speeches.
Assisting in live tweeting key points.
Preparing media briefs.
Distributing press kits to journalists.
I covered events such as:
Agricultural exhibitions.
Health camps.
Road project inspections.
Tree planting exercises.
Through these experiences, I learned the importance of coordination between communication
officers and journalists. I also appreciated the speed at which government communication must
operate to keep the public informed in real-time.
7 Teamwork and Collaboration
Throughout my attachment, I worked closely with communication officers, journalists, IT
technicians, and fellow interns. Teamwork was essential, especially during big events where
different tasks needed to be executed simultaneously.
For example, during the International Youth Day celebrations, the communication team divided
roles as follows:
One group handled photography.
7
Another group managed live streaming.
A third group (which I joined) drafted live updates for social media.
This experience taught me the value of teamwork, time management, flexibility, and
communication etiquette.
3.3 Analysis of Knowledge and Skills Gained
1. College Knowledge
The industrial attachment allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge from various units studied
in class into real-world practice. Specific examples include:
Art of Writing – I applied principles of clarity, coherence, and audience-focused writing when
preparing press releases, news articles, and official speeches.
Public Relations – Skills learned in handling media relations and managing the image of the
Governor’s office were essential in preparing communication materials and engaging with
stakeholders.
Communication Skills – Both verbal and non-verbal communication skills were applied during
interviews, staff meetings, and field coverage.
Crisis Communication and Management – I used knowledge from this unit to observe how the
Governor’s office handled emergencies and urgent press briefings, ensuring the public received
accurate and timely information.
Political Discourse – This unit enhanced my understanding of persuasive strategies, rhetorical
devices, and framing used in speeches, campaigns, and political messages disseminated through
the office.
Phonology – While less directly applied, phonology skills improved my speech clarity and
articulation during interviews and public presentations.
Research Methods – Applied in background information gathering, fact-checking, and compiling
reports before drafting official communication.
Structure of English Sentences (Syntax) – Ensured grammatical accuracy, cohesion, and stylistic
precision in press releases, reports, and news bulletins.
2. Industrial Knowledge and Applied Skills
8
Through hands-on training at the Office of the Governor, I developed practical workplace skills
that complemented my academic knowledge:
News Writing and Editing – Learned how to write concise, fact-based, and timely news reports
for dissemination.
Script Writing – Drafted scripts for official speeches, ceremonies, and documentaries.
Photography and Videography – Acquired practical skills in camera handling, framing, and
editing.
Media Monitoring – Gained experience in tracking news coverage and analyzing media trends.
Event Coverage – Participated in organizing and documenting county events, including taking
official photographs and producing summaries.
Time Management – Learned to handle multiple assignments within tight deadlines.
Workplace Ethics – Observed and adopted high standards of confidentiality, professionalism,
and accountability.
3.4 Observations and critique
The attachment was directly relevant to my Bachelor of Arts in Language and Communication
with IT program in several ways:
Language Skills: I applied academic knowledge of grammar, editing, and translation in preparing
speeches and articles.
Communication Theory: Concepts such as mass communication models, audience analysis, and
media ethics were useful when writing stories for the public.
Information Technology: I utilized IT skills in editing videos, managing digital content, and
publishing on online platforms.
Practical Exposure: The attachment bridged the gap between theory and practice by allowing me
to apply what I had learned in real government communication settings.
This relevance reaffirmed the importance of my course and boosted my confidence in pursuing a
career in language and communication.
9
3.5 Ambitions
To pursue a professional career in journalism, public relations, or corporate communication,
applying the skills gained in news writing, editing, and media production.
To specialize in media and communication for governance and development, supporting
institutions in promoting transparency and citizen engagement.
To further enhance my digital media and content creation skills, especially in photography,
videography, and online communication platforms.
To enroll in professional training and certifications (e.g., media editing software, public relations
courses) to sharpen my technical expertise.
To work in both government and media organizations, where I can contribute to information
dissemination and positive storytelling.
To eventually take up a leadership role in communication, either as a media officer, PR manager,
or communication strategist.
To pursue postgraduate studies in Communication, Journalism, or Media Studies for deeper
academic and practical grounding.
To use communication as a tool for community empowerment, by highlighting local issues and
success stories through media.
3.6 Challenges Faced During the Attachment

of sudden events or emergency press releases.
Recommendation to Fellow Students
Yes, I would recommend fellow students to seek industrial attachment at the Office of the
Governor, for the following reasons:
Exposure to Real-World Communication Tasks – Students gain hands-on experience in news
writing, editing, photography, videography, script writing, and media relations.
Professional Growth – The office provides a structured environment where students can build
confidence, discipline, and practical communication skills.
Networking Opportunities – Interaction with government officials, journalists, and media houses
creates valuable professional connections.
13
Multitasking Experience – Students learn to balance different communication roles under
pressure, preparing them for future careers in media and public relations.
Mentorship – Senior staff often guide interns, providing feedback and training in professional
communication standards.
However, there are also some challenges to be aware of:
High Workload – Students must be prepared for tight deadlines and sometimes long working
hours.
Limited Resources – At times, equipment such as cameras and editing tools may not be sufficient
for all tasks.
Despite these challenges, the benefits outweigh the difficulties, and the Office of the Governor
remains an excellent training ground for Language and Communication students.
14
