UTILITY
COMPUTING
WHAT IS UTILITY
COMPUTING?
• Utility Computing is a service provisioning model where
computing resources (storage, computation, applications)
are provided to customers on-demand, similar to how
traditional utilities like electricity, water, or gas are
supplied.
• Key Concept: Just as you pay for electricity based on
consumption (per kilowatt-hour), in utility computing,
you pay for computing resources based on actual usage.
REAL-WORLD
ANALOGY
• Think of utility computing like your electricity bill:
• You don't own the power plant
• You pay only for what you use
• The service is always available when you need it
• The utility company manages all the infrastructure
• You can scale up or down based on your needs
CHARACTERISTICS OF UTILITY
COMPUTING
➢On-Demand Service
➢Pay-per-Use Model
➢Scalability
➢Service-Oriented
➢Virtualization
TYPES OF UTILITY COMPUTING SERVICES
A. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
What: Raw computing infrastructure (virtual machines, storage, networks)
Examples: Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, Microsoft Azure VMs
Use Cases: Web hosting, development environments, disaster recovery
B. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
What: Development platforms and runtime environments Examples: Google
App Engine, Heroku, Microsoft Azure App Service Use Cases: Application
development, database services, middleware
C. Software as a Service (SaaS)
What: Complete applications delivered over the
internet Examples: Gmail, Salesforce, Microsoft Office 365, NetflixUse
Cases: Email, CRM, productivity tools, entertainment
D. Function as a Service (FaaS)
What: Execute individual functions without managing
servers Examples: AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, GoogleCloud
Functions Use Cases: Event processing, API backends, data processing
WIRELESS
NETWORKS
Definition and Basic Concepts
• Wireless Network: A computer network that allows
devices to connect and communicate without physical
cables, using radio waves, infrared, or other wireless
communication methods.
Key Characteristics:
• Mobility: Devices can move while maintaining
connectivity
• Flexibility: Easy installation and reconfiguration
• Scalability: Can accommodate varying numbers of
users
• Coverage: Can reach areas where cables are
impractical
TYPES OF WIRELESS
NETWORKS
• A. Personal Area Networks (PANs)
• B. Local Area Networks (LANs)
• C. Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs)
• D. Wide Area Networks (WANs)
