Control Engineering Assignment ECEG 3112

The document outlines an assignment for an Introduction to Control Engineering course, detailing various problems related to control systems, including transfer functions, damping ratios, steady-state errors, and stability analysis using the Routh criterion. It requires calculations for system parameters, root locus sketches, and Bode plots for different systems. Students are expected to analyze and solve these problems to demonstrate their understanding of control engineering concepts.

Introduction to Control Engineering (ECEG 3112) Assignment

16
1. A system having a forward path transfer function G(s) = and unity feedback.
𝑠(𝑆+1)
Determine the value of undamped natural frequency, damping ratio. If tachometer feedback
is introduced, the feedback path transfer function becomes (1+K). What should be the value
of K to obtain damping ratio of 0.6. Also calculate the percentage peak overshoot, first
undershoot, tp and settling time within the 2% of final value.
2. Consider the system shown in fig. 1. Determine the value of K such that the damping ratio 𝜉
is 0.5. Then obtain the rise time (tr), peak time (tp), maximum overshoot (Mp), and settling
time (ts) in the unit step response.

3. A unity feedback control system has the following feedback path transfer function:
𝐾(2𝑆+1)
G(s) =
𝑠(4𝑠+1)(𝑆 2 +2𝑆+3)

If the input r(t) = 1 + 5t is applied to the system, determine the minimum value of K to get
the steady-state error equal to or less than 0.1
4. For the system shown in Fig. 2, determine error co-constants. Also calculate the steady
state error for the following inputs:
i. A unit step input
ii. A unit velocity step velocity input
iii. A unit velocity acceleration input

5. Using routh criterion determine the locations of the roots of the following characteristic
equations and comment on the stability of the systems.
a) 2𝑠5 + 2𝑠4 + 5𝑠3 + 5𝑠2 + 3𝑠 + 5 = 0
b) 𝑠 6 + 3𝑠 5 + 5𝑠 4 + 9𝑠 3 + 8𝑠 2 + 6𝑠 + 4 = 0
6. The characteristic equations for certain feedback control systems are given below. In
each case, determine the range of values of K, for which the system is stable.
a. 𝑠 4 + 𝑠 3 + 3𝐾𝑠 2 + (𝐾 + 2)𝑠 + 4 = 0
a) b)𝑠 5 + 𝑠 4 + 𝐾𝑠 3 + 𝑠 2 + 𝑠 + 1 = 0
7. The open-loop transfer functions of certain unity feedback systems are given below.
Sketch the root locus of each system.
𝐾(𝑆+2)
a) G(s) =
(𝑆+3)2 (𝑆 2 +2𝑆+17)
𝐾
b) G(s) =
𝑠(𝑠+2)(𝑆 2 +6𝑆+25)

𝐾(𝑆 2 +6𝑆+10)
c) G(s)=
𝑆 2 +2𝑆+10
𝐾
8. A unity feedback system has an open-loop transfer function 𝐺(𝑠) = .
𝑠(𝑠 2 +8𝑠+32)

Sketch the root locus and determine the dominant closed loop poles with 𝜉 = 0.5 .
Determine the value of K at this point.
9. For the given open loop systems below
a. G(s) = k/(𝑠 2 + 2𝑠 + 2)(𝑠 2 + 2𝑠 + 2) with gain k = 10
b. G(s) = k(s+4)/ (𝑠 + 2)2 with gain k = 5
Do the following
1. Draw the bode plot.
2. Find the range of k for stability from yours bode plot.
3. Calculate the gain margins and phase margins of all given system and compare them for
relative stability.
4. If the value of gain K = 20 in all cases, what would be their relative stability?
5. Suggest control band width (at magnitude = -3dB) of these system from bode plot.
