1. Describe why the War of 1812 went poorly for America?
a. The War of 1812 was not great for America because America’s invasions failed
and the nation was not united over the issue. The Federalists and merchants of
New England did not like the War of 1812 and went against the war.
2. What was the outcome of the Treaty of Ghent?
a. This treaty ended the War of 1812 and led to the countries returning to the rules
and ways of life before the war began. Both of the countries were struggling and
neither were benefitting from the war, so they decided to end the war with the
Treaty of Ghent.
3. What evidence supports the idea of the Era of Good Feelings?
a. The patriotism and nationalism shown in American literature and art showed
certain themes that portrayed the pride that people had in America for being
able to stand up to England in multiple wars. The election of James Monroe also
showed the Era of Good Feeling’s ideas as he was part of the Democratic
Republican Party but used some of the Federalists ideas and policies.
4. What evidence contradicts the idea of the Era of Good Feelings?
a. The sectionalism between the different parts of the country like the North, South
and West was increasing. They prioritized different aspects of the government
and wanted different things that would benefit their area of the country. The
panic of 1819 also showed evidence against the Era of Good Feeling because it
was a crisis in the economy and caused problems like unemployment and debt.
5. Describe the purpose and all three parts of Henry Clay’s American System.
a. The National Republicans used Federalists ideas and this led to the
implementation of the Tariff of 1816, which was the first protective tariff, the
second bank of the US which helped with the financial stability and credit of the
country, and internal improvements like the creation of canals and roads, such as
the Erie Canal, that united the nation and helped with transportation.

amount of slave states to free states was balanced without Missouri entering as a
slave state, and if it did enter the way it wanted to this would disturb the balance
of the country. The Tallmadge Amendment was proposed which allowed for the
gradual emancipation of slaves in Missouri. Finally, the Missouri Compromise
established that Missouri would enter as a slave state and main would enter as a
free state.
7. How did the Supreme Court increase federal power?
a. It allowed for the Constitution and the laws created by the federal government
to be prioritized and be more important over state laws. This means that the
federal government was given more power and expanded the power of the
federal laws. This was due to the Supreme Court.
8. How did America gain more land?
a. America used foreign policies like the anglo-american convention to gain land in
the Oregon Territory together with England, and this included setting a northern
boundary at the 49th parallel for the Louisiana Territory. America also gained
Florida, which was acquired through the Adams-Onis Treaty
9. Describe the Monroe Doctrine and its impact.
a. America decided to emphasize that they did not want Europe to recolonize the
area in the west anymore, which was done through the release of the Monroe
doctrine. The US also agreed to stay out of European conflict . The impact of this
doctrine was not large due to America’s lack of power, but England sharing the
same ideas America benefitted them because it caused other countries to not
challenge this doctrine.
