Panic 1873 An economic collapse that prevent Reconstruction from growing, and
multiple bank failures and business failures.
Patronage Part of the compromise of 1877 in which Hayes has to provide political
positions for the South.
Compromise 1877 The compromise in which the South agreed to recognize Hayes as the
president in exchange for him ending reconstruction and pulling the
federal troops out of the South
Civil Rights Act 1875 The act that made it a crime to deny any individual of equal use of public
areas and did not allow racial discrimination in jury selection.
Pendleton Act An act that established reform when it came to how the civil service
officers were filled.
Chinese Exclusion Act The act in the united states that stopped further immigration of Chinese
Immigrants
Homestead Strike A violent strike between steelworkers and their company over wage and
contracts
Thomas Nast a famous cartoonist that exposed corruption in officials like Boss Tweed
Billon Dollar Congress The 51st congress that had a billion dollar budget, which democrats
criticized.

1. Why did Grant win the Presidency?
a. President Ulysses S. Grant had won because he gained popularity from
being a war hero from the Civil War. He was especially popular with the
African American citizens who had just gained the right to vote and were a
huge influence in the voting of Grant into the presidency.
2. What problems will Grant face as President? Describe 2 examples.
a. During Grant’s time as president he faced a lot of corruption and ill
intended acts from the officials around him. This includes the scandal of
the Credit Mobilier affair where certain officials used railroad stock to
make themselves richer, and the Whiskey Ring in which the private
secretary of Grant assisted in the theft of 3 million dollars from the
government through tax corruption.
3. Who was Boss Tweed? How does he gain wealth and power?
a. He was the person in charge of Tammany Hall, and he was a corrupted
official. He used his position and fraud, bribery, and graft to steal the New
York taxpayer’s money, stealing over 200 million dollars. The Tammany
Hall was a Democratic party political machine, which gave him the
position to be corrupted to make himself richer.
4. Describe the debate between hard currency and Greenbacks.
a. Due to the hard time that debtors were being put through because of the
economic collapse of the Panic of 1873, debates over the tight money
policies were brought up, and two sides had formed. Debtor groups
preferred greenbacks because they wanted the relaxation of harsh money
policies. They wanted soft currency rather than gold and silver.
5. Describe the political controversy of the Election of 1876.
a. The results of the election were contested by 3 states, all of which were
Southern states. There was a lot of debate and controversy whether the
president would be the republican Rutherford Hayes or the Democrat
Samuel Tilden.
6. How did the Civil Rights Act of 1875 protect the rights of African Americans?
a. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 was an act that protected the rights of
people and made discrimination because of race illegal, making it a crime
to deny anyone equal use of public spaces. African Americans were being
discriminated against and their rights were not being recognized, so this
act helped ensure that they would not face discrimination in jury selection
and would get fair use of public areas.
7. What did Plessy v. Ferguson establish?
a. Plessy v. Ferguson established that racial segregation was legal and
constitutional if equal facilities were created for the use of each race. This
allowed for segregation to occur and continue, and resulted in separate
buildings being created for white people and “colored” people, and the
buildings were never truly equal.
8. Describe the “New South”.
a. The South would be rebuilt and develop further through industry and a
developing economy. Although this was the hope for the south, in reality,
sharecropping and tenant farming ended up dominating the region and
economy, not allowing for real growth in industrialization.
9. How were African Americans disenfranchised or prevented from voting? How did
this affect future elections?
a. Violence and intimidation were used to stop African Americans from
voting, but other methods were used as well. Literacy tests and property
requirements eliminated many African Americans from being able to vote,
and so did poll taxes and Grandfather clauses. This made it so that
African Americans’ voices were not heard and Democrats gained more
political power.
10.Why did many Chinese Immigrants come to America?
a. Many Chinese immigrants became miners and helped build the railroads
in America. However, as they came and filled these job positions,
nativism rose up against the immigration of Asians in the west, where
many of them were going to.
11. What did the Chinese Exclusion Act do?
a. The Chinese Exclusion Act stopped the immigration of Chinese laborers
into the United states. Immigration was stopped for the first time based on
race and nationality in this act.
12. The Gilded Age is a time of growth in what two areas?
a. The population and economy during the gilded age faced rapid growth.
However, the politics of the Gilded age were heavily tied and based on
business and the economy which led to political and social issues from the
growth of industry.
13.What is the idea of Laissez Faire?
a. Laissez Faire is the idea that the government should not interfere when it
comes to society, and that they should keep a hands off approach.
14.What is Patronage? Why was there a call for reform? Describe the two groups
involved.
a. It is when jobs in civil service were given to the victor’s supporters.
However, many people were against this because it seemed that the
people who got these job positions were corrupt and not fit for the job, only
having that position because of their loyalty to the president or their party.
The Half-Breeds were against patronage and the Stalwarts supported
the continuation of patronage.
15.Describe the state of Tariffs in the 1880s.
a. The U.S Treasury had a lot of extra or surplus money due to the high
tariffs, and this led to people wanting to cut down the tariffs because of
how much they were.
16. What does the Pendleton Act do?
a. The Pendleton Act was an act that led to more civil service reform, and
made it so that there would be a competitive exam that potential civil
service officials would have to take.
