Chapter 1: The Spotlight Seeker

Mike liked being noticed.

Not in a braggy, football-captain, look-at-my-new-shoes way—though he

wouldn’t have minded that, either. No, Mike liked making people laugh. He
liked tossing in a dumb joke in the middle of math class just to hear the
ripple of snickers. He liked raising his hand when the teacher asked a
question he didn’t know, just to say something ridiculous and get the
room buzzing.

Sixteen years old, shaggy dark hair, and a smirk that looked permanent—
Mike lived for attention. But when it came to Natasha, his attention died in
his throat.

Natasha was the one girl in school who didn’t seem to notice him. She sat
by the window in English class, doodling in her notebook, the sunlight
catching in her brown hair. Whenever Mike tried to say hi, his mouth
betrayed him. Words scrambled, his voice cracked, and suddenly Mr.
Funny Attention-Seeker became Mr. Awkward Statue.

And today was no different.

“Mike,” whispered his best friend Leo as they walked down the hallway,
“you literally just froze when she looked at you. Again.”

“I didn’t freeze,” Mike argued. “I was… pausing. Like, for dramatic effect.”

Leo raised an eyebrow. “Sure. Because standing there with your mouth
open like a dying fish is very dramatic.”

Mike shoved him playfully, but his cheeks burned. He could joke with
anyone else. He could stand on a cafeteria table and belt out a cheesy
pop song just for laughs. But when Natasha’s eyes flicked his way, all that
confidence dissolved into smoke.

Later that night, lying on his bed staring at the cracked ceiling, Mike
muttered, “If only I wasn’t scared. If only I was the most fearless guy in
the world…”

He sighed and rolled over. Out his window, the moonlight shimmered on
the narrow river that ran past the edge of town. The water looked alive,
whispering secrets only the night could understand.

Mike sat up. Something tugged at him, pulling him toward it. Maybe it was
just restlessness, maybe it was fate.

He slipped on his hoodie, climbed out the window, and walked down to the
riverbank. The night was still, heavy, like the world was waiting for him.
Mike crouched at the water’s edge, staring at his reflection. The moon
stretched across the surface, cracked and silver.

“I wish,” he whispered, his voice trembling in the silence, “I was the most
fearless boy in the world.”

For a moment, nothing happened. The water lapped against the stones,
ordinary as ever. Mike laughed at himself. “Yeah, right. Like that’s gonna
work.”

But if he had stayed a little longer, if he had looked closer, he would’ve

seen the faint ripple of light spiraling beneath the surface… as though the
river had just swallowed his words whole.
