New Deal's Impact on Minorities and Economy

The document discusses the impact of President Roosevelt's New Deal programs, particularly the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Social Security Act, on various population groups, highlighting both positive and negative effects. While the TVA provided flood control and electrification, it disproportionately benefited the upper class over minorities, and the Social Security Act improved financial security for some but excluded many immigrants and African Americans. Overall, the New Deal played a significant role in alleviating the Great Depression, despite ongoing inequalities in benefit distribution.

According to Corbett et al.

(2023), President Roosevelt immediately started

addressing the issues of wages, employment, and other significant aspects of
citizens. These changes had a significant influence on minorities. One of the most
successful programs of the New Deal was the TVA (Tennesee Valley Authority), with
the idea based on the principle of government-managed and owning natural
resources and utilities. The support gained by specific population groups, such as
farmers and the business sector, regarding flood control, navigation, production of
fertilizers, and electrification initially of the Tennessee Valley. According to Carroll
(2022), the TVA is recognized as one of the most controversial New Deal programs
and gained several points of criticism; however, the goal of delivering flood control
options and electrifying the areas with living in poverty citizens was reached. The
impact of these programs on immigrants, African Americans, and laborers was
unequal compared to the other categories of the population. Even though the
program decreased corrosion produced by the flooding and provided electrification
of the many territories of the nation, the upper class felt a lot more improvements
and benefits than minorities (Conkin, 2016).
New Deal brought to the country one of the most important confirmations of
President Roosevelt's promises for the nation – assistance for the elderly,
handicapped, unemployed, and other eligible categories of the population. The
requirement was established that both parties involved in the employment contract
must contribute to the social security fund. The original purpose of the Social
Security Act was to provide the nation with the ability to obtain unemployment
insurance. The Act has impacted the lives of minorities in many ways, such as
reducing the population living at or below the poverty line, allowing them to receive
unemployment benefits, and ensuring that the aged population will have financial
means to support themselves. However, it has also impacted minorities in less
positive ways, such as the absence of coverage due to the ineligibility of immigrants
and African Americans who were employed in the agricultural sector with no
qualifying criteria for the newly implemented benefits (Lange, 2017).
The New Deal contributed to the ending of the Great Depression in many ways.
They include the citizens' economic condition stabilization, improving the
community's financial security reassurance, and producing the desired economic
effects. The results of the TVA program implementation provided critical living in
poverty areas with electrification and reduction of the flooding consequences. The
issues were still present and included the gaining of benefits by one population
class rather than another, with the unequal treatment of minorities regarding the
benefits from the TVA. However, these programs had an impact as a contributor to
the ending of the Great Depression (Corbett et al., 2023).
