Inverse Function Classnotes
Part I Inverse of order pairs, definition of inverse function, graph of inverse function
1) Find the inverse coordinate in the table.
Original relation
x 0 1 2 3 4
y 6 4 2 0 -2
Inverse relation
2) Is the inverse also a function?
3) Draw the above coordinates in the graph paper.
4) What do you observe from graph?
Definition
An inverse relation interchanges the input and output values of the original relation. This means that the
domain and range are also interchanged. That means, the inverse of a function 𝒇!𝟏 (𝒙) has all the same
points of the original function 𝒇(𝒙), but the x’s and y’s have been switched.
Only one-to-one relation can find inverse function.
Range becomes Domain becomes
Domain Range domain of 𝒇!𝟏 (𝒙) Range of 𝒇!𝟏 (𝒙)

Exercise of Part I:
Find the inverse of each function. Is the inverse also a function?
1. Ordered Pairs: {(4, −15), (−8, −18), (−2, −16.5), (3, −15.25)}
2. Table of values:
x -3 0 1 6
y 11.8 3.7 1 -12.5
3. Graph:

Part II Equation of Inverse
1. Find a table of values for each function and its inverse.
How to find the equation of the inverses?
Steps Inverse function of question Inverse function of question
a) b)
Step 1: Change x into y
Step 2: Change y or f(x) into x
Step 3: Use reverse
calculation, represent your
function into form
y = some x related function
Step 4: replace the y into

Let’s apply our knowledge of functions and their inverses to a real world problem:
Suppose that f(x) = 3x + 5 gives the distance in meters that you have travelled by time x in seconds.
1. How far have you gone after 7 seconds?
2. How long did it take you to travel 26m?
3. Find the inverse function.
4. What do x and 𝑓 !# (𝑥) represent?

In conclusion:
Two functions f and g that “undo” each other are called INVERSE functions.
Please fill in the missing information to make true of the statements about inverse functions,
1. The inverse function of f(x) is denoted at _______________________.
2. The inverse of a function ________________________ the members of the ordered pairs of the
original function.
3. The domain of the original function is the _______________________ of the inverse functions.
4. The range of the original function is the _______________________ of the inverse function.
5. Inverse function reflects over the line _______________________.
6. If the original function fails the _______________________, the inverse is NOT a function.
7. 𝑓5𝑓 !# (𝑥)6 = _______________________; 𝑓 !# 5𝑓(𝑥)6 = _______________________.
